Lazio

Lazio is known mainly as the region that hosts the capital of Italy - the glorious ancient city of Rome. The region is consequently overshadowed by its famous capital but Etruscans and the Sabine civilizations settled in the area before Rome even existed.

Overlooked but full of history, Lazio has endless destinations that can make your stay in Italy truly memorable. Transport is reliable so why not stay a little way out of Rome and experience everything Lazio has to offer?

In the south is the Frascati wine region where you can enjoy the taste of its fruity whites accompanied by the beauty of the surrounding area.

In the north is Viterbo, which was established by the Etruscans and has a city center surrounded by medieval walls, still intact after being built in the 11th and 12th centuries.

Subiaco is another delight of the Lazio region and is found alongside the river Aniene. It is renowned as a tourist and religious resort for its sacred grotto, Sacro Speco, in the St. Benedict's Abbey. The city is also famous as the first in Italy where books were printed in the 15th century.

Take a stroll through Palestrina and see its terraces once occupied by the massive temple of Fortune, whose monumental remains were revealed as a result of American bombings during the Second World War. A 735m/2411ft hill just outside the town provides a view of Soratte mountain, Rome, the Alban Hills and a breathtaking view of the Mediterranean sea.
