Piemonte

Piedmont (Piemonte) is located in the north-west of Italy and shares a border with both France and Switzerland. Its major city is Turin, Torino, also known as the home of the 2007 winter Olympics.

The scenery of Piedmont encompasses the flat rice growing plains of the river Po to the majestic peaks of the Alps. From the 11th to the 18th century, Piedmont was in fact a part of France in the principality of Savoy. It was a key part of the Risorgimento or Italian resurgence, which was the struggle to create an untied Italy, which occurred in 1870 under non other than a king from Piedmont.

In northern Piedmont there are alpine valleys with spectacular scenery, lakes and medieval towns like Varallo. This is an attractive town half-way up the Sesia Valley, which boasts a remarkable church.

Vercelli is also a must-see destination when traveling through Piedmont. Make sure you try a sweet sparkling wine, Spumante, when you are there and visit Asti, the center of Italy's most prestigious wine growing region.
