Calabria

Calabria is the south-most region of Italy and lies in a rugged peninsula where grapevines, fig and olive trees cling to arid mountain sides and where the immemorial sea crashes against the cliffs and beaches of a long and intricate coastline.

The main city was Reggio Calabria until 1970 when Catanzaro was crowned the new capital.
The region stretches close to the island of Sicily being only separated by the Straits of Messina, made famous in ancient times for the whirlpools created during tidal changes.

Over the centuries, successive empires have invaded Calabria and asserted their domination including the Byzantines, Romans, and even Normans on their way to and from The Crusades in Jerusalem.

Places worth visiting in this stunning region include San Sosti where you will find the Sanctuary of Madonna del Pettoruto, founded in 1274 by the monks of the Abbey of Acquaformosa.

Close by lie the ruins of the Rocca, a 10th century castle, which according to tradition was used by Hannibal during the Punic Wars. And for those who are looking for more of a relaxing time away, there is always Cetraro Marina with its tranquil ambience right on the lips of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Staying in a monastery or convent guest house in Calabria is a unique alternative to mainstream hotel accommodation. Open to all, these guest houses give you a true insight in to life in Calabria - a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of Calabria and experience a hospitality tradition that has been around for 1500+ years.
