Umbria

Umbria is known for its medieval hill towns and gorgeous countryside. It is situated next to Tuscany and is often overlooked by tourists but contains many Etruscan sites within short distances of each other.

The main city is Perugia but there are a lot of fascinating smaller towns worth exploring like Todi, Gubbio and Montefalco. Don't forget Assisi, also known as the birthplace of St Francis the patron saint of animals. Orvieto is a good destination for architecture lovers with one of Italy's best Romanesque Gothic cathedrals. And for those who like their music, opera and visual arts, go to Spoleto in time for its famous music festival in late June to early July.

There are so many interesting places in Umbria, you can pick any one and be more than delighted. There is more to see and experience than can be absorbed in a one-town visit. But if you only have limited time, we recommend you pick one town and explore it thoroughly. Assisi is often the first choice for many but Spoleto, Todi, and Gubbio are all equally as fabulous.
Staying in a monastery or convent guest house in Umbria is a unique alternative to mainstream hotel accommodation. Open to all, these guest houses give you a true insight in to life in Umbria - a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of Umbria and experience a hospitality tradition that has been around for 1500+ years.
