Monastero San Giuseppe offers spectacular views of Assisi in peaceful surroundings. Situated in close proximity to some of the major attractions of the town, this is an ideal Monastery Stay for all.
This lodging is within walking distance of the Basilica di Santa Chiara as well as the World Heritage listed Basilica di San Francesco d'Assisi. The Saint Francis Basilica was built after his canonization in 1228, and completed in 1253. The lower church hosts frescoes by renowned late-medieval artists Cimabue and Giotto. In the upper church there are frescoes of scenes in the life of Saint Francis previously ascribed to Giotto and now thought to be by artists of the circle of Pietro Cavallini of Rome. The Basilica was restored after being badly damaged in 1997 when an earthquake hit the town.

The accommodations were simple and most comfortable, all we needed for a semi-silent retreat for the 4 days we were there. It was beautiful, quiet, and most pleasant.
Kristin - LA, United States (September 2019)
This is a perfect venue for exploring Tuscany. Our host was delightful and there was so much he wanted to offer us.

I enjoyed this stay and loved spending time on the wonderful rooftop terrace overlooking the valley and in the outdoor garden area. The bedroom I had faced the street and became very noisy at night. Because of the heat and humidity, I was reluctant to close the windows for sound control, but the second night I was able to have a fan in my room, which allowed me to close the windows and it was much quieter.

I loved it there. Very comfortable bed and I got very peaceful sleeps. The place is super well located, the room is clean and simple with a beautiful little balcony. Breakfast is very simple but you have fruits harvested in the monastery. Very nice, will come back.

It was a wonderful location. Staff, esp. reception, were great. Nuns made us most welcome to celebrate Eucharist with them.

We stayed as a couple in June 2015. The convent was welcoming. Our double room was excellent and had a great view. We stayed 2 nights but 3 would have been better. Secure parking was available at an additional cost but very worthwhile. You can drop your bags at the door and the staff will give you directions for the car park. Breakfast was OK. The desk staff recommended us to a couple of good restaurants which we enjoyed. I would highly recommend this accommodation. The location is fantastic and great value for money.
Wayne - New South Wales, Australia (June 2015)
Great except for one very noisy night kept awake by activities in lobby.
The evening meals were terrific, great pastas. I loved the cherries from the monastery garden.
Mary Ellen - WV, United States (May 2015)
Wonderful outlook, peaceful environment, the very epitome of a monastery stay. Handy to many facilities in Assisi, though quite a way from the main Basilica. Basic but suitable breakfast.
Brian - Canterbury, New Zealand (May 2015)
Wonderful and peaceful location. Our room had a balcony overlooking the valley. At the end of hall a window opened out with a view of the Basilica of St. Francis including the sound of morning bells. Not as much understanding of English by the staff as we had hoped.
Pat - MI, United States (May 2015)
We enjoyed our stay. It is well located, the receptionists were courteous, and we loved attending mass in the morning at their chapel!
Monica - NJ, United States (October 2014)
Great place and nice staff. Mother Superior was very warm and friendly.
David - , Singapore (June 2014)
The room had an excellent view and the monastery was very peaceful.
We had a nice time attending Mass and the sisters were very accommodating with our one-year old, although there were no cribs or children's beds available.
The bed was a little hard and it isn't possible to check out between 7:30 and 8:00am because the sisters attend daily Mass during this time. We didn't mind that, but it might be a problem if you are trying to catch an early train out of Assisi.

Breakfast was good with some variety. Sometimes communication was difficult with non English. Watched a beautiful Umbrian sunset from the terrace.
Desma - Victoria, Australia (September 2013)
The monastery was very large and very quiet. Breakfasts were satisfying.
Rebecca - OR, United States (July 2013)
Loved the terrace (great for sunsets), the views incredible, and wonderful sisters.
Elizabeth - OH, United States (June 2012)
A perfect location and a beautiful building plus the sisters and staff were warm, friendly and helpful. However the reason I rated the sleep quality a little less was that there were large groups of young people also staying there who were actually very noisy until very late one night.
Andrew - , United Kingdom (August 2011)
It was unfortunately difficult to find wifi. To get the wifi at the monastery, you needed a cell phone, which I did not have with me, and the city has limited public internet areas. But the service was incredible, the room was fabulous, and the atmosphere was incredibly tranquil. I would ABSOLUTELY recommend it to ANYONE. It is honestly the BEST way to travel as a young single woman by herself. I felt safe and cared for, with a perfect location to see the entire city. I would return to stay for a week if I could! Do not miss this for anything! You cannot replace this experience with a hotel!
Adrienne - CA, United States (August 2011)
I really appreciated being able to pay by travelers cheques or Visa and to not have to carry cash on me for a five night stay.
Ruth - , New Zealand (June 2011)
Breathtaking vistas.
Mary - IL, United States (June 2011)
The accommodations were clean and comfortable. The nuns were very warm and friendly. The food was outstanding. Only one nun spoke english a little bit but in a way it was fun.
Maureen - NJ, United States (October 2010)
Very welcoming staff despite very limited English spoken. Rooms were spotless. Location was superb and the room had million dollar views over the valley below. Very reasonably priced- great value for money. Having onsite parking was a bonus, but it wouldn't accommodate anything other than a small car. Breakfast was good.
