I stayed at Convento del Carmine Maggiore for almost a month using that as a base to study Greek temples and Byzantine mosaics in the churches. The director (Giovanni) and his staff welcomed me and were very attentive during my stay. I'm a senior citizen (female) traveling solo and I felt very safe right in the middle of the oldest market (Ballaro). Trains, buses, grocery stores, trattorias, cafes and major sites were within minutes of the convent. The atmosphere outside is alive and chaotic with vendors shouting out to buy their fruits and vegetables. But that's what I wanted. Remarkably, the frenetic energy of the morning market calmed down after 2 pm and it was very quiet in the evening. The room was very clean with fresh linens. The ladies on the staff were always mopping and dusting and absolutely pleasant to talk to. I used Google translate since I don't speak Sicilian and I used Rome2Rio app for times and routes of local buses and trains. The breakfast is very typical...coffee, a croissant and melba toast with butter and jam. It is not an American breakfast. If you want eggs and bacon you can go to a tourist restaurant down the street. I bought my food at the local bakery where every day they had roasted chicken or breaded pork cutlet, potatoes, salad and a fresh roll for about 10 Euros. I bought fresh salami and Italian cheese at the grocery store about 5 minutes from the lodging. The accommodations are basic with a clean room with fresh sheets and a hot shower and lovely staff to make you feel very welcomed... and the sound of the church bells throughout the day sets the tone for an amazing opportunity to see the real everyday life of the Palermo people. BTW, I felt very safe walking around. The cost of the room was an incredible value compared to a tourist hotel in the tourist section of the city. I am booking this lodging again. I'm a retired military officer and have lived and traveled the world and choosing this monasterystay was the foundation for a wonderful Sicilian adventure.
This guest house is operated by the Domus Carmelitana Palermo Onlus.

Located in the center of Palermo near some of the city's major attractions.
This is a multi-ethnic, cultural location that exemplifies Palermo & Sicily's historic roots from Europe, to Africa & the Middle East. City with easy access. Note that this is a very old part of the city and many buildings appear in disrepair, but that is this historic area of Palermo. Many attractions are within walking distance and public transport links are nearby.
