House of the Suore Terziarie Francescane della Beata Angelina
Istituto Beata Angelina is one of the best located venues in central Assisi. Directly opposite from the Saint Francis of Assisi Basilica, the views are breathtaking. A typical Umbrian house with clean and spacious rooms.
This venue is directly opposite from the World Heritage listed Basilica di San Francesco d'Assisi. It was built after his canonization in 1228, and completed in 1253. The lower church hosts frescoes by renowned late-medieval artists Cimabue and Giotto. In the upper church there are frescoes of scenes in the life of Saint Francis previously ascribed to Giotto and now thought to be by artists of the circle of Pietro Cavallini of Rome. The Basilica was restored after being badly damaged in 1997 when an earthquake hit the town.
Rated 4.8 out of 5
The location is perfect, with windows facing the Basilica. The sisters were friendly, kind and helpful. Definitely will stay here again.
This convent is operated by the Suore Terziarie Francescane della Beata Angelina.
The beauty of this venue lies in its location as it lies atop an Assisi hill that overlooks the Saint Francis Basilica. The building's stone facade is typical of an Umbrian guest house. A lovely garden and courtyard complete the picture and give guests a quiet place to relax.
No Mass is held. Guests can access chapel on request.
Breakfast is included in the price.

The traditional feel of this venue and its typically Italian window shutters is mixed with a modern interior, which is clean and well presented. Bathrooms and furniture are particularly new, giving guests a modern stay in a traditional lodging.
Chair and Desk
Located in central Assisi, inside its historic city fortifications in the San Giacomo qurter. Located on a small hilltop inside the Assisi city center. Well located for walking to central Assisi attractions. Public transport to central and surrounding locations is also nearby.
Following the devastating Assisi earthquake of 1997, this venue was forced to close. After being completely renovated, it reopened in 2002.
The location is perfect, with windows facing the Basilica. The sisters were friendly, kind and helpful. Definitely will stay here again.

We loved the location and all of the care provided Sister Clothilde. We can't wait to go back.

We love our stay at the monastery and with the Sisters. The location was great, the time with the Sisters was better.
Elisa - , Singapore (October 2016)
The sisters are very welcoming and friendly. They tried their best to communicate to us - non Italian speaking guests.
Consuelo - , Singapore (October 2016)
The location is incredible, with amazing views. The sisters are absolutely lovely and most hospitable. It is a monastery, so rooms are simple, but clean. Chapel is wonderful. Gardens are nice. The breakfast is very basic Italian.
Alexandra - AB, Canada (October 2016)
I recommend you ask the bus driver to drop you off at the beginning of the street and walk downhill to the convent. It's an easy walk and beautiful, because the basilica is in front of you (and remember, it's downhill). There is no hair dryer in the room, but I did not ask if there is one at the desk to borrow.
Mary K - LA, United States (October 2016)
We received a very warm welcome from Sister Nadia and the other Sisters. We could not have wished for a better location or for the kindness and hospitality shown to us. This is a very special place to stay and we felt very privileged to have had the opportunity of being apart of this community.
St - , United Kingdom (September 2016)
The view of St. Francis Basilica and the countryside from our bedroom window was amazing. The nuns were lovely. Its a privilege to stay in this location.
Joanna L - IL, United States (August 2016)
Wonderful stay. Room was more than adequate for our needs, with a fantastic view of the basilica. The nuns were extremely friendly, helpful and kind and added to the overall amazing experience we encountered in Assisi.
The sleep quality was good, but unfortunately we were awoken by the tragic earthquake that destroyed many towns and villages in central Italy. Would love to return one day, and would certainly stay with the sisters again. A big thank you.
Jayne - Lincolnshire, United Kingdom (August 2016)
I stayed in a room just in front of the Basilica of San Francesco so enjoyed the lovely view of the Basilica. Though I would not recommend to stay there during hot summer season. As they don't have vending machines for cold drinks and the curfew is quite early at 10pm, it is not very convenient.
Ito - , Japan (July 2016)
Lovely location, wonderful kind helpful service by the nuns, excellent value.
John - New South Wales, Australia (July 2016)
Sisters are outstanding hosts. I and my family have stayed with the sisters 3 times over the past 3 years and plan to return again.
Anthony - CA, United States (June 2016)

Sister Clotilde was warm, welcoming and just an angel. Location was fabulous and setting was peaceful. We are so grateful for this facility.
Rinna - TX, United States (June 2016)
Location fabulous. Friendly helpful staff. Packaged croissant & toast inadequate. Make fruit available.
Barbara - Ontario, Canada (May 2016)
I've appreciated very much staying with the welcoming sisters and the peaceful atmosphere of the house. I will certainly go back there, in order to experience the Franciscan simplicity and beauty of the place, so inspiring when you contemplate the basilica from your window at every time of the changing day (and night ...) light.
Domenico - , France (May 2016)
We loved the location of the Monastery! We were warmly welcomed by the Sisters and our view was extraordinary. There was a lovely spiritual tone throughout the place! Gorgeous paintings and art work!
Cynthia - Ontario, Canada (May 2016)
Very welcoming and gracious! The room was comfortable and the view of the basilica is incredible.
Isaac - MI, United States (May 2016)
Excellent venue for staying in Assisi. Sisters are very joyful, cordial hosts.
Anthony - FL, United States (May 2016)
My stay at Istituto Beata Angelina was a magnificent experience. There is nothing like the moment that the taxi turned the corner and I saw the Basilica of San Francesco to my right and the taxi driver turned to me and said "this is Beata Angelina" and he pointed to my left. Sister Clotilde was a warm and inviting hostess who immediately felt like family. My stay there provided me with a wonderful balance of spiritual quiet time and travel through a beautiful part of Italy. I loved every moment of my stay at Beata Angelina and I hope to return one day, sooner rather than later.
Teresa - NY, United States (April 2016)
The Sisters of Beata Angelina were amazing. They were welcoming, informative and even woke up early to make sure we had coffee the morning we departed. I didn't want to leave. I would recommend the Istituto Beata Angelina to everyone.
Chris Ann - MD, United States (October 2015)
We loved our time with Sister Clotilde. She took time to give us a map of Assisi and show us where to go and gave us the operating hours of the various sites. The location is wonderful, directly across from San Francesco Basilica.
Kathleen - AZ, United States (October 2015)
I cannot say enough about my delightful stay here. A very warm welcome, assistance with my limited Italian, gorgeous view from clean, comfortable room. Highly recommend!

Debra - MN, United States (May 2015)
Beautiful. Nuns were very friendly. Room was small, beautiful and clean.
Alicia - VA, United States (May 2015)
Kind sister your home is so beautiful and it brought us great spiritual comfort.
Even though it poured rain day and night while we were there, we came back to Rome refreshed and renewed!
I hope you understand the we left early because of the weather - you were kindness itself, and were so patient with our French/Italian/English communication!
We hope to be there again, maybe next year, when I come to Europe again from Canada.
Grainne - Ontario, Canada (March 2015)
A beautiful peaceful stay, the nuns are so hospitable and kind, we loved the way they were attentive to our needs: nothing was too much trouble.
Zelpha - New South Wales, Australia (December 2014)
It was amazing, great location, simple breakfast. Incredible view.
Joseph - OK, United States (November 2014)
This is the most beautiful place. Perfect location. The rooms are lovely with spectacular views. Sr. Clothilde was most gracious and so much fun. Assisi is a must see.
Melissa Mercedes - TX, United States (November 2014)
Right across the street from the Basilica. Our room overlooked the courtyard and you could see the Assisi Valley. It was the feast day of St. Francis and there was alot going on in town. Very beautiful town. Cafe next door to convent had very good food and baked goods. Everything a very shot walking distance.
Julie - MN, United States (October 2014)
wonderful. Welcoming esp. Sr Clotilde.
Annette - New South Wales, Australia (October 2014)
The view was spectacular. Sisters were very nice despite they do not speak English.
Anne - ON, Canada (September 2014)
I loved my stay. The breakfast was quite basic, but the sisters were very welcoming and the room was very clean, with wifi available. I would definitely return.
Robin - DC, United States (September 2014)
This is our second visit to this wonderful accommodation. We will always return there when we go to Assisi. The Sister in charge is the most loving and kind person you want to have looking after you. The location is outstanding as are the views from the bedrooms.
Douglas - Queensland, Australia (September 2014)
I had a very nice stay here, the sisters were very nice, friendly and welcoming. The view from my window was fantastic! The room was nice and clean. I would strongly recommend Istituto Beata Angelina if you want a central, relaxed and peaceful stay in Assisi.
Ann - , Sweden (August 2014)
(a) Breakfast is *extremely* basic -- pre-packed croissant and toast, as on an aircraft . Fruit and / or yoghurt would be a great addition. But I was OK with it. (Excellent coffee.) Everything else couldn't be better.
Philip - GA, United States (June 2014)
Although not everyone spoke English, they were so warm and welcoming. They gave us a room with the most outstanding views. I have never stayed at monastery stays before but it will be my first choice in the future. I highly recommend Istituto Beata Angelina to everyone travelling to Issisi.
Janice - Queensland, Australia (June 2014)
Thank you to lovely Suore Adiota, who greeted us and helped throughout our stay. Beautiful property, right across from Basilica di San Francesco, our room for three had gorgeous views. Highly recommended!
Beverly - British Columbia, Canada (May 2014)
This stay was the HIGHLIGHT of our 3 week travel in Italy. I was not prepared for the SPECTACULAR view from our window, right on to the Basilica - wow. I burst into tears when the sister opened up the shutters :) Wish we had stayed longer. The nuns were beautiful and couldn't do enough for us.
Douglas - Queensland, Australia (May 2014)
Sisters were perfect hostesses. My wife and I could not be happier anywhere else.
Anthony - CA, United States (May 2014)
Extraordinary hospitality, helpfulness and sense of welcome. Location and view unparalleled. Rooms simple and breakfast even simpler; nonetheless, THE #1 location in Assisi.
Mark - OR, United States (May 2014)
There is no better location in all of Assisi ... simply spectacular. The nuns are wonderfully helpful and gracious. An outstanding experience.
Nicholas - NE, United States (April 2014)
I like this convent as it is very peaceful and the scenery is really awesome as you can see St Francis Basilica right out of the window.
The room is very clean and spacious. None of the nuns can speak English and hence, it is very hard to communicate with them, I will recommend this to people who can speak Italian so that the nuns can recommend you nice places to go.
Agnes Clare - , Singapore (March 2014)
Very quiet and peaceful stay.
Monica - NSW, Australia (February 2014)
We had an outstanding stay at the guest house. The Sisters were all very welcoming and with my sparse Italian knowledge we were able to understand each other. The location could not be beat literally right across from the Basilica of St. Francis. The whole town is walkable so the advantage of this location was the view of the Basilica and the valley below. Breathtaking. We had stayed at guest houses before and knew of the simple set up and this was exactly what we were looking for.
Cheryl - NJ, United States (October 2013)
Ann - MN, United States (October 2013)
Sister Adeodata was very welcoming and very pleasant throughout our 3 night stay.
The towels were changed daily and the room was very clean. A very peaceful stay.
Carol - Ontario, Canada (September 2013)
Firstly, Sister Adeodata is wonderful. She was very helpful in assisting us locate the convent when our car navigator failed and also in providing a special adaptor to charge our phone. She even gave us fruit when we could not locate a store in the town. She was a very kind, helpful and generous host. The convent was very well located. She made us feel as if we were being hosted by family, rather than strangers. I look forward to visiting again.
Lorangela - Victoria, Australia (September 2013)
The Sisters were very sweet. Damask bath sheets and bed sheets stored with dried flowers!
Elizabeth - CT, United States (September 2013)
I absolutely loved staying here. My room overlooked the church of St Francis. The room was large and beautifully appointed. The terrace provided a quiet retreat after a busy day sightseeing. The nuns were delightful. I was welcomed and well looked after. It was sad to leave.
Shannyn - Queensland, Australia (August 2013)
We felt welcome and appreciated the hospitality. The location, cleanliness and price are excellent.
Maria - MD, United States (May 2013)
Warm welcome. Everyone extremely helpful, giving excellent advice about what to see in Assisi. Room was spotless. Wonderful location with direct view to the basilica. Highly recommended.
Sarah - Devon, United Kingdom (April 2013)
The sisters were very helpful and friendly. However, I could not find out how to access wireless, though they did have access to the Internet via cable in one public room.
John - IA, United States (February 2013)
Literally a block away from St. Francis basilica. Beautiful views of basilica and surrounding countryside from room window. Breakfast was minimal, but there's a restaurant-bar a few steps away from the monastery for coffee, pastries etc. The Sisters were very helpful with questions. All in all, a very good bargain.
Mary - CA, United States (November 2012)
It was wonderful. An ideal location, a spotless room with the most lovely bath linens, and above all, the sister who welcomed me just radiated warmth, hospitality, gentleness--it was just amazing. Staying there again would be a privilege.
Vicki - IA, United States (October 2012)
Very warm, loving environment.
Stephanie - CA, United States (October 2012)
What a sensational location, the view from my window straight at basilica s. francesco. Several good places for food close by. Mother superior always had a smile which would light up any room, and even though she did not speak english and I spoke very little Italian we managed to communicate. Her care and generosity were heart warming. Thank you
Beatrice - South Australia, Australia (October 2012)
This convent was superb in every way! The location with a million dollar view was incredible. The most outstanding aspect was the kindness and caring extended by Suore Adeodata....who lives and breathes her faith.
We would return here to this convent if possible as often as we could! Loved every moment!
This monastery is an ABSOLUTE GEM...the Nuns are extremely friendly and helpful, making sure that your stay here is as comfortable as possible...and the location is directly across from the Basilica of San Francesco...if you have the opportunity to travel to Assisi, this is perfect lodging.
Robert - TX, United States (October 2012)
Rosemary - Queensland, Australia (September 2012)
Fantastic location, Sisters were very welcoming.
David - Victoria, Australia (September 2012)
While the rooms were clean and with brilliant views, the minimal breakfast was a real issue for me and others who were staying there. Also the lack of any facilities for a cup of tea/coffee or snack. Everything outside of breakfast had to bought and food etc in Assisi can be quite expensive.
Bernie - , New Zealand (September 2012)
Beautiful place, Fantastic location and very friendly Nuns - A real treat which made our visit to Assisi - Thank You
Janice - New Zealand, New Zealand (September 2012)
This was a great place to stay. The views of the Basilica and Umbrian countryside from our room were breath-taking. The rooms are ensuite and simple but do the job and they are spotlessly clean. There are outdoor terraces for relaxing, and the location is excellent. The pigeons in the roof are a bit disruptive if you're on the 3rd floor. The Sister who took care of us was a joy.
Brett - London, United Kingdom (June 2012)
Best place to stay in Assisi. Great location, very clean, confortable rooms, the sisters are very lovely and kindly.
Monica - Nuevo León, Mexico (May 2012)
All was good and the sisters were beautiful.
Thomas - New South Wales, Australia (May 2012)
The location is perfect: we could look out of our room windows and see the front entrance to San Francisco Basilica. The staff was very friendly and tried to help us plan our stay. Assisi is beautiful. We wished afterwards that we had planned to stay longer in Assisi and less in some other larger cities. We highly recommend this guest house. We recommend the taxi over the bus from the train station as one still has to climb up a hill with their suitcases if going by bus. Taxi should cost about 15 to 18 Euros.
Michael - NH, United States (April 2012)
One of the best stay I have, access to chapel, and located just across the basilica and very hospitable sisters. The view is amazing, overall I am very satisfied with the experience staying in this accommodation.
Budi - Western Australia, Australia (November 2011)
Absolutely wonderful experience. So thankful the sisters are there.
shawn - UT, United States (October 2011)
It was the best of the four hotels we stayed at during our visit to Italy. The location can't be beat, and the sister (unfortunately, we didn't get her name) who took care of us was very friendly and helpful.
Ron - PA, United States (October 2011)
The Sisters were very friendly and willing to assist even with our language barrier. The rooms clean and tidy. Were able to park our car on site. This accommodation was directly across from Basilica di San Francesco and when the day tourists went home we had this view all to ourselves. Would highly recommend Assisi and this accommodation to anyone.
MR - Queensland, Australia (September 2011)
Just as advertised; very helpful hosts; fantastic experience. Know that the Sisters speak limited English, but that they are willing to work in broken Italian and gesturing.
Andrew - NC, United States (July 2011)
The shower really left a lot to be desired. The nuns were lovely. Breakfast was left out in the kitchen area. I wasn't sure at first if it was for me or not, as I was not told so during my first night, morning. The door to get in and out of the monastery was quite tricky. My first night, I was not sure I was going to get back in. Finally after 3 rings, I was permitted entry.
Mary - Ontario, Canada (July 2011)
A delightful experience. The rooms were immaculate and the location was just fantastic. The sisters (or at least the one who greeted us) was so lovely. We felt extremely welcomed and wanted. We wished we had have stayed longer in Assisi, simply to enjoy this lovely convent. Highly recommended.
Mark - New South Wales, Australia (June 2011)
I only saw any staff when I checked in and then once at breakfast, which was okay but a bit odd.
Gwenyth - Herts, United Kingdom (March 2011)
The whole atmosphere is so unique, we have never stayed in a monastery before, but will definitely do so in the future! The sisters were so nice and friendly and relaxed, we received excellent hospitality (regardless of the language difficulties).
