The building is dated back to 1863. Over the centuries, the significance of the people living in the house was so great that the name of the street was changed to reflect the many artists who lived in the building.
Customer Reviews
The breakfast is poor. The lift is tiny.
James - Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom (October 2011)
Great location, very basic, personnel helpful, breakfast dreadful by all standards. Towels very thin, small and rough.
Brian - Queensland, Australia (October 2011)
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The location is perfect, minutes from Trevi, Spanish Steps and Piazza Navona. Sister Helen very helpful advising local restaurants and services and concerned for us, when one of us was sick. I am a travel agent and Monastery Stays was an efficient and accurate booking agent.
We will recommend both LAR137 and Monastery Stays to others.
Gloria - Western Australia, Australia (September 2011)
We would have never found this place without a taxi! The room was adequate with a balcony overlooking the courtyard. What a pleasant surprise in the middle of the city! The breakfast was adequate. We really enjoyed chatting with Sister Helen. She was very helpful when we had questions.
Mary - WI, United States (September 2011)
Our stay was one of the highlights of our trip. We call it "an oasis in Rome"..so close to the Spanish Steps and many of the sights of Rome. The sisters were lovely... they watched over us, anxious to help and so interested in what we were doing. Sr Ann Helen waited each night to greet us after our long day of sight-seeing, to say "Good night" and "Sleep well". The garden was a real treat...beautifully green with lots of fragrances and colour from roses, azaeleas, geraniums and gardenia.... and all this in the middle of Rome. We thought ourselves particularly privileged to be able to stay there and thank the sisters for having us. They invited us to return one day...we will!
Cathie - Victoria, Australia (May 2011)
The room was basic as promised, absolutely immaculate and a pleasure. Our window looked out over the garden and we woke up in Rome to birds singing, not traffic. The sisters were very sweet and I would stay there again. The location - 12 minutes or so to the Spanish steps, 14 min to the Trevi fountain, we walked everywhere. Area filled with restaurants, shops, bars.
Anne H - Ontario, Canada (April 2011)
I enjoyed my stay there - everyone was lovely - the sisters and the women who worked there. Had a nice room with a balcony overlooking the dear garden.
Katherine J - PA, United States (April 2011)
It was in a great location, felt very safe, room was comfortable. Enjoyed the fact that there was a garden to sit in.
karen - Tasmania, Australia (October 2010)
Nice basic clean accommodations. Truly kind and caring people, with a heart of gold. Mosquitoes at night. Shower door which was hard to open and close.
David - CA, United States (October 2010)
It was in a fantastic position in Rome within walking distance to all tourist places. And for a city position it had a beautiful garden setting to relax in. The monastery was also very peaceful. The breakfast was very very basic. Dry biscuits with a packaged croissant and tea or coffee!!!
Melissa - Queensland, Australia (August 2010)
simple room; kind people cleanliness, garden view from windows, breakfast was sparse - croissant + coffee
Sarah - LA, United States (July 2010)
My expectations were high, as my sister and I had stayed at the convent before. We thought the experience was wonderful 12 years ago, and it turned out to be the same in June. The location in Rome, the room (no frills, very comfortable), the garden, the cleanliness, the quiet. And the price.
I love the fact that there was no TV or phone in the room. It means the rooms are quiet (i.e. no noisy neighbors). The 10:00 pm curfew was always in the back of my mind, but I don't mind it and it contributed to the quiet at night. Actually, would not want it to change!
Breakfast is meager, but that's Italy. No complaints.
Mary A - DC, United States (June 2010)
The nun we dealt with the most was so nice ! the location was excellent, the place clean and very safe and secure.
The only thing we found odd was the bidet in the bedroom. could have been a bit better breakfast but otherwise have nothing bad to say.
gale - British Columbia, Canada (May 2010)
Rooms were spacious; bathrooms were modern; atmosphere was very restful; gentle hymn singing some mornings was a bonus wakeup experience; Privacy, no kicking out of the room to service it. Very personal service. Breakfast was machine-dispensed coffee and a stale bun - even instant coffee and toast I had to fix myself would be better. Yes, a unique experience and good value.
Evelyn - South Australia, Australia (December 2009)
Breakfast could have more choices.
Dorothy - Florida, USA (October 2009)
Clean and quiet nice view of garden from out 4th floor balcony.
(1)elevator is so tiny that we could only get one piece of luggage with one person at a time. Only afftected us upon arrival and eparture so no big deal. We walked the stairs most of the time
(2) breakfast was disappointing--great cappocchino but croissant in a plastic bag was less than expected
(3) 1000 PM (2200) curfue put limits on our evening strolls
Tom - CA, United States (September 2009)
Good advice from nuns on places to go and how to get there.
Sister Helen was helpful and friendly. The monestary did not promote their difference i.e. explain their lifestyle or beliefs or let us join in their activities or interests.
Breakfast was very disappointing. The coffee was good however the plastic wrapped croisent and portion control biscuits were very poor. No fruit, no juice, no fresh items.
robert - Victoria, Australia (June 2009)
The location, the helpfulness and hospitality of the nuns, the cleanliness, the spaciousness. Everything was fine.
Ingrid - Quebec, Canada (June 2009)
Some elements were better than expected and some were disappointments . We especially appreciated the ease of check-in. Also, simple but clean rooms with a great view, English speaking Sister and the location was great. Dissapointments were a very inferior breakfast (almost inedible).
We didn't seem to have opportunity to enjoy gardens as we were not shown around (minor detail, though).
Diane - Alberta, Canada (June 2009)
We were worried when we learned we did not have our bath but decided to just go with it and it turned out that there were 4 bathrooms alone just on our floor so we didn't have to wait for anyone else in the morning as we could both get ready at the same time - it actually saved us time. It was very safe, safer than we thought it would be in the monastery, clean, organized and the nuns were very friendly. Breakfast was basic and the same everyday but nice that it was included. Our curfew was 10pm and while we generally don't stay out too late it was always in the back of our head that we had to get back to it and it was annoying. The beds were extremely uncomfortable, probably didn't sleep as well if we had just slept on the floor.
Evan - CA, United States (April 2009)
Great location! There was no heat during the night! The nuns turned off the heat past 10 pm.
Dale - IL, United States (December 2008)
I think the accomodation exceeded expectations - it was very clean, private and the sisters were friendly and helpful with advice about my stay. It was very centrally located and very affordable for the position. My room was quite large and I had my own ensuite. The sisters showed concern for the guests and were very keen to help out in anyway. The only drawback is the curfew (the monastery I stayed at had a curfew of 10pm). But then, I understand it because they need someone to watch the doors..and that is about security. Also, if you're staying by yourself, often you don't need to be out that late..but it would be good to know it doesn't matter what time you get back. I was really happy with the stay. It was much nicer than I imagined.
Margaret - Victoria, Australia (October 2008)
Quiet, clean, safe and affordable Friendly greeting and helpful sisters. Beautiful soft singing by nuns in early morning. Basic rooms were clean, safe and affordable. No complaints. Breakfast (included in tarrif) was minimal and very basic. Not the place for people wanting night life, a vibrant social scene or luxury
Greg - Victoria, Australia (October 2008)
The sisters were cordial, and extremely helpful in giving directions.
The rooms were larger than expected and the bathroom shower was a BIG surprise. I expected just a hand held but we had a separate shower and tub. Speaking of which the bathtub was marble and about 3 ft. tall.
We were unaware that there was a specific time for personal phone calls...and the sisters were upset when our friends did not call at the "appropriate" time between 9-10 a.m.!
Breakfast...was a terrific cup of coffee and a pre-packaged croissant. That was it! A great value, good beds and location, location, location!
Carol - TX, United States (October 2008)
The little garden in the monastery was great. The bathroom in the room we were in was very adequate. Breakfast - packaged croissants and crackers. We ate it the first day and ate out the other days.
Hilde - New South Wales, Australia (September 2008)
This convent was a typical spartan convent but our room had a fantastic view of neighboring gardens from a little balcony (we were on the top floor).
Sister Analena who hosted us was very dear.
There was an elevator from the first floor (not the ground floor) which held one person and one suitcase at most. The rooms have simple twin beds and the towels are thin. There was a long wait for hot water to reach us on the top floor.
James - CA, United States (May 2008)
- Immaculate standards of cleanliness
- protected personal security
- rooms agreeably furnished, basic but functional utilitarian
- welcoming breakfast room
- privacy guaranteed
- tiny, beyond tiny elevator. Did not at all affect us as we carried backpacks and used the stairs.
- breakfast as it was should be seen as part of the enjoyment.
- 2200 hr curfew will be a deterrent for some.
Ann-Marie - British Columbia, Canada (May 2008)
The bedroom and bathroom were spacious and clean. The nuns were friendly and helpful. The nightly rate was very good. The breakfast was too meager. A coffee and bun just wasn't enough to support a day's walking.
Richard - Ontario, Canada (October 2007)
The location was great. The room very clean. The breakfast was very minimal and the same every day.
