Casa Vacanza Madonna dell'Orto Patronato Pio IX is a well presented guest house, with warm, welcoming hospitality in a great location. The sights and unique charm of Venice at your doorstep make this an experience not to be missed.
Well located to all sites on the island and the heart of the traditional and still Venetian local area of Cannaregio.
Rated 4.6 out of 5
Our highest esteem goes to Father Peter for his kind, welcoming, delicate attitude and sens of humor.
This monastery is operated by the Padri Giuseppini del Murialdo.
The building exudes history and retains beautiful architectural features in the exposed stone work of the walls to the timber ceiling joists, along with cultural features and famous artworks. The guest rooms are well appointed with comfortable, well designed modern facilities.

Natalia - QC, Canada (June 2024)
Wonderful place to stay while in Venice. Beautiful!
James - CO, United States (June 2024)
Thank you for a lovely stay! It was wonderful.
Amy-Lee - Limpopo, South Africa (June 2024)
Peaceful location, easy walk for us from the station (but a water taxi stop was nearby too). We loved being away from the busy centre, it felt like a sanctuary away from the beautiful but hectic San Marco. Friendly and helpful welcome from Don Pietro. We enjoyed visiting their nextdoor church, for which we got a voucher, very beautiful! Great alternative to a standard hotel or Airbnb, would definitely recommend!
Tabitha - London, United Kingdom (June 2024)
Our stay was excellent. The room was large and clean. It was a little far from the train station so when we were to leave Father Peter arranged for a porter to take our luggage. Highly recommend this monastery to anyone visiting Venice.
Susan - AB, Canada (May 2024)
Lovely big room, super clean. We were greeted by one of the Fathers who was friendly and helped book a restaurant for dinner. The location is great and quiet, there's not much to not like about the stay!
Breanna - ACT, Australia (May 2024)
Lovely place to stay. Very close to a water bus stop. Rooms were spacious and clean. Father Peter made sure our stay was vey comfortable.
Vinodh - , United Kingdom (May 2024)
I can't recommend this place enough, it was an amazing place to stay in, the rooms were superbly clean and the staff was very friendly and helpful. The location is also great, and also 2 min away from a vaporetto stop. It was truly unique staying in such a historic 16th-century building!
Sumedha - , Netherlands (April 2024)
Wonderful quiet stay just out of the main tourist area. The rooms were spotlessly clean and the best bed on our months long holiday. Breakfast was basic but got us going in the morning. We would recommend this stay to all.
Donald - QLD, Australia (April 2024)
This was a wonderful place And I felt privileged to stay here. The rooms were very clean and modern and had all the needed amenities. While the location was a little out-of-the-way, it was quiet and there was a water transport around the corner We enjoyed the history of the place and the surrounding canal and the delicious breakfast! Father Peter went out of his way to make our stay and memorable. There was a train strike during our visit and we decided to stay two more nights because we were afraid that we would get stuck somewhere trying to travel by train. He worked very hard and diligently to fit us in because they had a full house. This we will always appreciate and remember. I will recommend this place to anybody and everybody who goes to this stunning historic city. This experience made my stay!
karen r - LA, United States (October 2023)
Fr. Peter was very friendly. He even gave us a tour of the monastery church. Everything went smooth.
Khaing - IN, United States (December 2022)
The priest who welcomed us couldn't have been nicer. He spent quite a bit of time orienting us to the building and room and even called a restaurant to see if they could accept a party of four. We also met another couple in the breakfast room, and they were really nice people. It was nice to be away from the crowds, but we weren't too far from all of the action in Venice. We had a lovely stay.
Rosemary - CA, United States (November 2022)
We were so pleased with this, our last stay before we headed home. As other reviews have stated, you are not in the heart of things, and that is exactly why we chose this hotel. Fr. Was so welcoming and gave us a wonderful tour of the facility and we even were able to pick out which room we had. The three rooms we viewed were all lovely. We chose the top floor room that was set off on its own and it made for a peaceful stay. Breakfast was coffee, tea, yogurt, cereal and rolls. Lovely start to the day.
It was an easy walk to wherever we wanted to get to, and there was a boat stop not far at all that ferried us wherever we wanted to go.
Overall, we were so pleased with this stay and highly recommend it to all.
margaret - IL, United States (November 2022)
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here, Father Peter was a kind and welcoming host. It ia a little out of the way but you are in a less touristy part of Venice. The Vaporetto is only a few minutes walk away and very efficient for getting around. We walked from St Marks Sq to here a couple of times and regularly walked to various destination from the Casa. Will be very happy to stay here again.
Peter - ACT, Australia (October 2022)
Absolutely perfect and such a warm welcome from Father Peter.
Cecilie - OSLO, Norway (October 2022)
We enjoyed our stay very much. The location is great, the reception was very warm and friendly. Our room was spacious and bright, with beautiful view towards Santa Maria dell'Orto, Murano and San Michele. Very clean with a modern bathroom. Simple Italian breakfast (pastry with tea/coffee).
Hubertus - , Germany (October 2022)
It was so perfect in every way
Diana - , United Kingdom (October 2022)
very very pleasant stay !!!
Yvan - , Switzerland (October 2022)
A quiet, friendly place that breathes culture and glory of the past. The former refectory full of beautiful old paintings, a room with a view on the canal, a fridge with everything needed for a breakfast, a very friendly priest who hosted us and brought fresh croissants every morning. A wonderful church (Madonna dell'Orto) next door. A wonderful haven after full days walking the streets or the Jardini and Arsenale.
Marijke - , Belgium (October 2022)
Thanks to Father Peter, my stay in Venice is so much nicer having him as my host. Casa Vacanza is immaculately clean. The towels smell really nice. There’s no curfew. There’s always water in the fridge for hydration (that’s very important). Father Peter brings fresh warm bread (different kinds) from the bakery during breakfast. The bread with olives was special. The location is excellent, far away from the madding crowd, so you get to rest. It is in a residential area so you get to see how the locals live their day to day lives. To me, that’s really special. And the church right next to it is rich in history, dating back from 16th century. But it was Father Peter who made it feel like a home in Venice. He wants to make sure you’re comfortable and safe. It felt like having a father while i was in Venice. Just make sure to be there on time when he expects you to be. Overall it was a lovely stay, thanks to Father Peter. I only wish I was able to say goodbye and thanked him before I left but I couldn’t find him during checkout.
Marie Celeste - NY, United States (September 2022)
It was very congenial..room was exceptional..large and light with beautiful views.only would wish for hanging space for clothes and towel rail in bathroom. You should inform newcomers to bring their own soap and tooth mug.otherwise I’m looking forward to my next stay. Very easy for transport links. A very warm welcome and the manager was very kind to carry my heavy case up to my room and back down when I left.. thanks for a wonderful stay.
Paula - SURREY, United Kingdom (September 2022)
My nephew and I just loved our stay at casa vacnza Madonna dell'Orto. A beautiful peaceful backstreet we had a spotlessly clean and bright room with a great view. The stay was really made special by the wonderful father who looked after us so well - Thank you
Kate - N/A, United Kingdom (September 2022)
This is a great place to stay. It is immaculate. The beds are very comfortable. The linens are lovely. The priest in charge always puts out croissants, cereal and yogurt for breakfast. Coffee, tea and bottled water are always available. Father is very knowledgeable about the area and has great tips on places to visit and eat. He is a very helpful and charming guy. An excellent choice for women travelling on their own as it is very secure.
Suzanne - IN, United States (September 2022)
Excellent experience! We were thoroughly happy with our stay. Our room was particularly clean, spacious and comfortable and the entire guesthouse was very peaceful. The elevator was also helpful for carrying luggage. Fr. Peter was extremely helpful and available to all the guests. We appreciated his warmth and hospitality. Though slightly off the beaten track from the main hub of St. Marks' Square, there is a convenient vaporetto stop close by. We found it was about a 20-25 minute walk to St. Mark's, which we enjoyed. We loved the area and felt safe: the Cannaregio is quieter than the main tourist hubs, and it offered a wonderful assortment of art and historical attractions, expanding and deepening the Venice experience. For Tintoretto fans it is a must!
Theresa - ON, Canada (September 2022)
Wonderful quiet location, super helpful host.
Georgina - United Kingdom, United Kingdom (September 2022)
It was absolutely lovely, very nice ambience, loved being in the old establishment. Went to morning mass one morning, the church full of beautiful paintings. The Padre spoke good English and very helpful.
Gunilla - , Sweden (September 2022)
We had a lovely stay! Many thanks!
Catherine - , Germany (August 2022)
Love the quiet location. Room was perfect and the Father could not have been more accommodating.
Lucille - FL, United States (August 2022)
Excellent welcome, a lot of kindness and attention. Breakfast is simple but complete. Water bottles freely available, which is a luxury in August in Venice. Very well renovated room, beautiful, large and very comfortable. We absolutely recommend. In addition, the location is ideal, direct access by boat from the airport. Located in a very beautiful neighbourhood of Venice, easy access to while staying a little away, quiet
Vincent - , France (July 2022)
We had an amazing stay. Our train was very delayed leading to a late check in. Father Peter was incredibly accommodating of the delay and made us feel welcomed. We are grateful for having met him. The accommodation was very clean, comfortable and tranquil. The location was perfect. It was overall a fantastic experience, we are looking forward to returning. Many thanks for the hospitality.
Xin - NSW, Australia (July 2022)
Wonderful stay. Fr. Peter was an amazing host during our short stay in beautiful Venice. The Casa Vacanza is beautifully located in Cannaregio, a less touristic neighbourhood in Venice but still an easy walk from all the mandatory visits (including St Mark's and the Biennale) or even easier ride in the vaporetto station located just behind. The rooms were super clean, renovated, equipped with heat and A/C, strong wi-fi connection. The breakfast was one of the major pluses: not common in Venice to find such a cosy location with clean and nice rooms AND breakfast (the pastries were delicious). It also has an elevator for bags and for people with walking trouble. For the more artistry, you will find some beautiful Domenico Tintoretto's on the walls of the Casa Vacanza and also in the parish church of the Madonna dell'Orto (where you have daily Mass and also can visit with a voucher that Fr. Peter gives you on arrival). Definitely recommens this to everyone!
Ruben - , Portugal (July 2022)
Father Peter was helpful, kind and considerate and available.
Ira - NC, United States (July 2022)
Father Peter was a most gracious host. He was truly interested in our well being. He made us feel very welcome in his home. The family room was very large and comfortable. The air conditioning in the room was fantastic! The breakfast was wonderful and fresh. Having morning Mass in the chapel of the Church was the icing on the cake.
Francis - SC, United States (June 2022)
We were very well received and everything was well explained and processed. Great rooms, clean and bright, Wonderful breakfast and relaxing atmosphere!
Mario - QC, Canada (June 2022)
Lovely place, would recommend to friends and family. Location was perfect, rooms were clean and big.
Hannah - , Denmark (June 2022)
It was the most delightful place to stay. To wake up to quiet was magic. The bells ringing or the sound of children playing ball games was all part of the joy. I loved the situation. Well away but within walking distance of major tourist attractions. Every part the area was so very beautiful. I would love to go back.
Elisabeth - VIC, Australia (June 2022)
Staying at Casa Vacanza was the best decision we could make. Father Peter was such a kind and welcoming host and made us feel at home from the moment we arrived until the day we left. The establishment is serene and bright, the rooms extremely clean and the location perfect, far from the tourist crowds, in a neighbourhood frequented more by the locals. We will definitely come again. Thank you so much for having us!
Ioana - , Romania (June 2022)
Father Peter is wonderful! So kind and helpful. The free breakfast and water was so nice. The rooms were very clean. We had lots of space to sleep and had the top floor and bathroom to ourselves which was lovely. Highly recommend!
Jennifer - GA, United States (June 2022)
Quiet area, Father Peter a wonderful host, a little walk far from St. Marks', but a great value for venice
Kathleen - CO, United States (May 2022)
Quiet, no frills, friendly, clean. Would stay again
Piergiorgio - VIC, Australia (May 2022)
Lovely stay. A calming place to stay in Venice. Father Peter was very kind and welcoming. The pastries at breakfast were nice. The location was convenient but not as crowded as other parts of Venice. We would definitely stay here again.
Emma - GLOUCESTERSHIRE, United Kingdom (May 2022)
I had a wonderful stay at Casa Vacanza Madonna dell'Orto Patronato Pio IX. The room was very clean and recently renovated -- the bed was comfortable and the bathroom was spacious. The location is great -- right in the city of Venice, but far away enough from some of the most touristy areas to get a better sense of the local atmosphere (and more quiet). The staff were very welcoming and even gave me a voucher to visit the church and see the art next door. Overall, I would highly recommend as a quiet and nice place to stay when visiting Venice!
Jordan - NY, United States (May 2022)
I really enjoyed staying at this remarkably peaceful place. The only thing that I could suggest would be to have another, and more comfortable, chair in the room. Otherwise, it was perfect.
Peter - ON, Canada (May 2022)
Really friendly and helpful proprietor. Made to feel very welcome. Large clean rooms. Although a bit further out, very close to water bus stop(5 min) and very quiet at night. Lovely old building next to a beautiful church. Would definitely stay again.
Michaela - Devon, United Kingdom (October 2021)
Very happy with the hospitality, friendly Father with memories of Australia.
Anthony - ON, Canada (September 2021)
We had the most wonderful stay here, it was by far better than our expectations. Fr. Peter is a wonderful host and made certain we were well taken care of. The facility is comfortable, very clean, quiet.
Tina - SK, Canada (December 2019)
Our room was fabulous. Newly renovated. All white and sparkling clean. The bed was very comfortable and the area very quiet. Wonderful nights sleep. It’s out of the way of the hustle and bustle of shopping but has some fabulous restaurants nearby. Very easy to get around as ORTO ferry stop is a very short walk away.
Karen - Qld, Australia (October 2019)
Our stay was lovely at the Casa Dell 'Orto . It was, as it was said by others, out of the hustle and bustle of the central area of Venice. A 3-5 minute walk to the Orto vaporetto stop. I somehow missed this in the reviews- it was imperative that you know the number above the door. Once there, we were warmly welcomed by Fr Peter and shown to our room. It was very clean and had a great hot shower. Breakfast every morning was freshly baked pastry and yogurts, coffee , tea, There were always bottles of water in the frig. Fr Peter was very helpful in finding local places to eat and gave us cards with a discount! It was a fun walk across the island to the city center- I wish we could have figured out how to get back to a few places we passed on the way. Just charming -off the beaten path! We were able to navigate the vaporetto system pretty well. At night after being dropped off at Orto, it did feel a bit isolated walking to the monastery. If I had been alone, I might have been a bit wary. (there was no reason to worry- we had no problems at all) One night when we were just not ready to call it a day, we stopped in at the bar at the Grand Hotel a few doors down and had a nightcap. I would definitely stay here again. Fr Peter could not have been more lovely.
Linda - MA, United States (September 2019)
Very friendly welcome. No trouble during our stay.
Peter - Worcestershire, United Kingdom (September 2019)
Thank you very much to the man who is in charge of the reception office for his great kindness and his good advice.
Florence - , France (September 2019)
Very friendly and helpful staff
Janet - N/A, United Kingdom (August 2019)
Our stay could not have been better. We loved being in this residential neighborhood; we felt like "locals." Father Pietro was an extremely welcoming host, proud of his church and the residence. He offered good advice and was always helpful. I also enjoyed the opportunity to view all the Tintoretto in the adjoining church. This was a special experience. I would definitely return again.
Amy - VA, United States (July 2019)
Beautiful monastery, room and area. Very close to the vaporetto stop.
Missy - NJ, United States (July 2019)
We had a wonderful time and cannot wait to go back. We had a wonderful time and cannot wait to go back. *Make sure that you know the house number* (prominently displayed in the Monastery Stays documentation) because this is above the door at which you ring the bell. When you ring, just wait till the door is opened in person - don't expect to be buzzed in immediately.
Quiet & peaceful (but no curfew: keys given to outside door); rooms, bathrooms, dining room spotless; air-conditioning good. Plenty of cold bottled water in fridge at all times, yoghurts etc "for if you are suddenly hungry" (and breakfast stuff at breakfast, of course). I echo everything that has been said in these reviews about Don Pietro, for whom no trouble would have been too great, and who also suggested an excellent local restaurant.
This is a wonderful area to be based in Venice, surrounded by plenty of locals (yes) and relatively few tourists, and yet be close to both the centre and the station. Once you are off the Strada Nova, eg as you pass Sarpi's statue, the flood of tourists drops away and you are left almost alone.
However, I continue to think that the main attraction of Monastery Stays in general, and of Casa Patronato Pio IX in particular, is to be away from the usual boring hotel thing. Staying somewhere like this is very special and cannot really be compared with staying in an hotel: it's the particular atmosphere in these places that can't be bought for money. Some have more secular staff running them than others, but Casa Pio IX makes the point that with them, their hospitality is brought to you directly by religious, and that their fees (which are anyway extremely reasonable) also go to help their local work with youngsters - and that's not something you will ever get in an hotel, whatever the price.
Finally, if you are interested in art/painting in general, and in Tintoretto in particular, this is very much Don Pietro's area and he will be very happy to chat about where you might go. Plenty of books about T. on the table in the sala. Tintoretto's parish church is right next door (tickets given free by the Casa) - I particularly loved the Beheading of St Paul (not "St Peter" as the postcards say!) and of course Venice is stuffed with his paintings. I had previously found him difficult to like, but this time I went to the Scuola di San Rocco where his greatest paintings are to be found, and my goodness I have now had a complete change of heart about Tintoretto. When we got back that evening, Don Pietro was interested to see our reactions.
In short, I highly recommend the Casa as somewhere simple but very special. My 19-year old has just come in and when I told him what I was doing, his instant suggestion was "Oh, say that it was wonderful".
Thomas - London, United Kingdom (July 2019)
Located in Cannaregio, it's quieter and calmer than most of Venice, a refuge from the crowds of tourists. It's conveniently located not too long a walk from the train station, about 15 minutes, and near a vaporetto stop which also services Marco Polo airport. I stayed in the room Cielo aptly named because it has a skylight. It's very clean, simple, but modern and large (a triple though I was staying by myself) with a beautifully renovated bathroom with exposed beams. Breakfast was simple, but very delicious with fresh pastries from a local bakery, with tea and instant coffee. Yogurt and cold water, both fizzy and still, were always stocked in the refrigerator. The large common area was furnished with antiques and had large windows with a view of the campanile and the island of Murano. Good restaurants and a gelateria are only a 5-10 minute walk away.
This was the first time I stayed here, but I hope it won't be my last. Father Pietro was very kind, but there was a little confusion over my arrival time, so it's best to precise when you leave notification. It was also the first time I used Monastery Stays, so I wasn't sure what to expect, but the accommodation and hospitality at Madonna dell'Orto exceeded my expectations. Also to note, there are beautiful paintings in the church next door by the famed artist Jacopo Tintoretto, whose 500th anniversary of his birth was recently celebrated, who is also buried in the church, so that was a bonus! Three nights is not enough in Venice!
Sue Ann - CA, United States (July 2019)
A peaceful place, a little removed from the busyness of tourist Venice but possible to walk everywhere. The room was spotless and the shower was new and spacious. Breakfast was simple and self service. Air conditioning was excellent and essential in the heat. Fr.Peter was very welcoming and helpful with recommendations for local restaurants. The Orto vaporetto stop for the airport is just 3 minutes walk away. There is a lift. No curfew. Other guests were very quiet and there was no noise at any stage.
Mary - CO MAYO, Ireland (June 2019)
I love this place so much and I'm so grateful I was able to stay here! It was so wonderful to be able to come back here after a hectic day, the Madonna dell/Orto was quiet, beautiful, and a perfect refuge. The rooms themselves were clean, well air-conditioned, and I believe recently renovated. There was breakfast every morning from 7:30-10:00 and (honestly the best bit) as much water as we needed in the fridge. It's located in a beautifully quiet part of town that was lovely to explore and take a quiet walk through after a long day fighting crowds. Father Pietro was incredibly kind and I truly enjoyed every conversation we had. I would stay here again in a heartbeat, and I hope I will have the opportunity to do so soon.
Katherine - NC, United States (June 2019)
Very quiet, comfortable, clean and easy to access by boat. Nice to get away from the crowds. Nice to have Mass in the morning. We enjoyed our stay.
Janet - KY, United States (June 2019)
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Madonna dell’Orto. We would certainly recommend to our friends and family. A very big thank you to Father Peter who really did make us feel special and welcome, and for his generosity. We are so glad we stayed.
Peter - Vic, Australia (June 2019)
This is a very lovely place.
Kristen - MO, United States (June 2019)
This is a lovely, tranquil place to stay. The host is lovely and the breakfast was a pleasant way to start the day.
I would recommend this to anyone coming to Venice who did not want to stay in hustle & bustle of the main streets.
Felicity - NS, Australia (June 2019)
All of the places we stayed were great however this was one of our favourite places to stay ! It was perfect - very comfortable beds, hot water (and great water pressure), clean and new/updated rooms, a/c, quiet and safe neighbourhood - away from the crowds but an easy walk to any attractions, and fantastic breakfast buffets (more than we expected). The attached Church is gorgeous and I would highly recommend going inside to look at the art. Father Peter was very kind and helpful, checking in periodically to see how we were faring, and giving us great advice on places to eat, visit and how to get around. I would use Monastery Stays for future trips and would highly recommend Casa Vacanza Madonna dell'Orto Patronato Pio IX (would happily stay there again and for longer). Thank you Father Peter!
Melanie - ON, Canada (May 2019)
Great location - walked everywhere and about a 10 minute walk to the closest Vaperetto dock. Of the 4 we stayed in on this trip, this was our favorite. Most updated facility - felt brand new. Amazing beds - felt like foam covers over the mattress. Father was very helpful and accommodating. Yummy pastries for breakfast.
Shari - GA, United States (May 2019)
The accommodation exceeded our expectations. We will certainly use and recommend VEV118. My one comment is that the entrance is not well marked.
Kayb - TN, USA (May 2019)
Father Peter was most welcoming, kind and helpful. Our third floor room was immaculate, quite comfortable and quiet for sleeping. One of us has arthritic knees, so the small elevator was an advantage. Breakfast was simple but adequate. This was our third visit to Venice and Casa Vacanza was our favorite accommodation in our favorite location. The Cannaregio neighborhood was lively but free of the tourist hordes that plague San Marco. Some good restaurants are nearby (Fr. Peter has recommendations), and there’s a wonderful coffee shop a few streets away. We would not hesitate to recommend this place to friends, and, again, Father Peter, who is the soul of this place, is one of the main reasons why.
Martha - MA, United States (May 2019)
Father Peter was very hospitable and helpful.
Nadine Annette - New South Wales, Australia (April 2019)
It was a beautiful place to stay. We got a warm welcome and everyone was very helpful and friendly. A wonderful experience.
Avril - , Ireland (April 2019)
The location is excellent, you can reach almost every part of the city in a 15-30 minutes walk. The rooms were okay, and the service (with the free breakfast) was excellent. I recommend this place to everyone travelling to Venice.
Csenge - , Romania (April 2019)
Highly recommend. Will stay again when in Venice
Filomena - VIC, Australia (April 2019)
We are so glad we chose to stay here for our first trip to Venice.
Fr Peter was so kind and helpful and very understanding when we arrived so late .He patiently waited for us and made us feel so welcome. The room was large, I loved the windows and the bathroom was clean. The living room/common sitting area was inviting and they also had a small breakfast included in the price. The location is excellent and is close enough to walk to major attractions, shopping area & restaurants, but just far enough for some peace & solitude. We went in to visit the beautiful church attached to the monastery on our first day. You can either walk or you can take the water bus and get off at Orto to reach this beautiful place. We will definitely stay here again if we ever get back to Venice.
Lilibeth - NJ, United States (November 2018)
So pleasant and wonderfully situated. Very lucky to have stayed in that part of Venice. Father Peter, the Parrish priest, was a lovely, kind host - we are privileged to have met him.
Peter R - NSW, Australia (October 2018)
Warm, welcoming and wonderful.
Lisa - CA, United States (October 2018)
We loved being a bit out of the busy streets, yet close enough to get around easily. Very quiet place. Peter was very hospitable and helpful. I would highly recommend this monastery and hope to return someday.
Terry - WA, United States (October 2018)
We had a delightful stay at the monastery, everything was as stated. The room was spotlessly clean, excellent shower and very quiet. Would certainly want to stay here again, excellent location and easy access to airport and city.Breakfast was perfect, we just bought some extra fruit in the market and had use of a fridge. Father Peter was an excellent host and provided lots of tips and advice, I really enjoyed having access to the great reference books on Tintoretto and the Palaces of Venice. Highly recommend staying here.
Edel - , Ireland (September 2018)
What a great place to stay 20 min from train station by boat and the boat drops you off at the dock which is 5 min walk to your rooms. Father Peter was a joy to deal with and saved us a lot of money and headaches trying to figure out the boat schedules, especially to the airport. You can walk to all the tourist sites from the monastery in 15 min. Make sure you say hello to father Peter and he will guide you.
George - TX, United States (September 2018)
Father Peter gave us a wonderful welcome and was so kind. He directed us to a good place to eat and to some unusual sites. We had a wonderful time. The area was quiet and clean
Mrs - , United Kingdom (September 2018)
Excellent - especially our host Fr Pietro.
James - Angus, United Kingdom (September 2018)
We arrived at Madonna dell'Orto via the Vaporetto from the airport. It's an easy walk from the stop to the Casa. What a fabulous stay we had. Father Peter met us and made us feel very welcome. The room was glorious with views across the back to the busy waterways. It was quiet, incredibly clean, comfortable and had everything we needed. Breakfast is more than sufficient with fresh (still warm) bread, cereals, and yoghurt as well as tea & coffee on hand at any time of the day. Father Peter gave us great advice on a restaurant for our first night in Venice which was just perfect around the corner. This area is a hidden gem as it is so quiet compared to the rest of Venice, it's a real treat wandering back over the canals after a busy day of sightseeing, to our little peaceful haven. There are plenty of bars and restaurants around here though. It's an easy walk to the train station, but if taking bags, you may wish to get the vaporetto. What an absolute joy to stay here & we would definitely stay again if back in Venice. Thank you Father Peter for making our stay so enjoyable.

My wife and me stayed in Monastery Stays (in Casa Vacanza Madonna Dell’Orto Patronato Pio IX) for four nights in the second part of September. We enjoyed an outstanding view from our room on the bell tower of Madonna Dell’ Orto church.
The room is spacious, white windows with shutters are brand new, the windows and/or shutters can be easily shut or open at your wish to breathe the sea air: renovation has reached this monastery. Elevator helps you to ascend to your floor. Basic facilities include even more than a complete set: your bathroom occupies a separate room along the corridor, besides, in the same corridor you have got one more toilette to use if you like. So you stay, as if in your own separate flat, in the quietness of the monastery! This differs a lot from business-like hotels in bigger cities that try to place “all in one room with the use of partition-modular principle†or from popular sea resorts, which try to arrange maximum facilities at a minimum space for the same price.
Breakfast is not varied very much, but yummy enough, if you like milk and crunches with fruit, tea, coffee, croissants, butter, jam. Apart from this, you can drink tea or coffee, at day-time or during evening, whenever you come.
A family atmosphere is supported by the padre in charge of staying, whose hospitality and very warm welcome you can feel every day, starting from the brief morning advice on directions. Apart from advice, padre Peter gave us a free pass to the Madonna Dell’Orto, where Tintoretto and his daughter La Tintoretta are buried.
As for the luggage, after check out in the due time in the morning we were allowed to leave it at our room! And when we came back to take it to the airport at two o’clock, we were treated with a farewell cup of “genuine Italian coffee†that padre was really nice to prepare.
Tip: Vaporetto called “Alilaguna†is five minute walk from the Monastery Stays Madonna Dell’ Orto and it takes only 35 minutes to go the Marco Polo airport! This was one of the last pieces of advice we took from padre Peter. We would like to meet him again and to stay in the quiet sestiere (district) of Cannaregio in Madonna Dell’Orto next year.

My wife and I have stayed in Venice on a number of occasions and we can honestly say that this was our most enjoyable.
When do you get the chance to stay in a building of such beauty and history. Our room was bright, spotlessly clean with modern facilities and a comfy bed. Father Peter is a great host who puts you at ease and makes you most welcome. The monastery is situated close to the vaporetta stop in a quite part of Venice which is within easy reach of the main tourist spots. There are also various restaurants and bars to choose from which are close by. For anyone who is thinking of staying at the monastery I would have no hesitation in recommending it.
Joe - AL, United Kingdom (September 2018)
Father Peter was warm, welcoming and interested in our activities on a daily basis.
Sandra - Alberta, Canada (September 2018)
The Monastery was beautiful, it was full of 16th century oil paintings. The lounge had antique furniture that was in excellent shape. The breakfast was plentiful with coffee/tea, with the areas well known apricot marmalade filled croissants. Also cheese and sliced meats, along with fresh fruit.
Linda - VA, United States (August 2018)
This is a wonderful place to stay. Peaceful, quiet, and beautiful it is an oasis in Venice with everything you need to be comfortable.
Theresa - NY, United States (August 2018)
Everything was perfect.
Monica - ON, Canada (July 2018)
Overall a very positive experience. Close to Vaporetto stop and local eateries. The host, Father Peter is helpful and he conducts mass daily at 9 am and 11am on Sundays. The wifi works well. The rooms vary and some don't have windows on the walls but instead just a skylight, while other rooms have normal windows on walls. Overall I rate this stay as excellent and recommend it to others. The breakfast is heavy on carbohydrates - bread, and yogurt with sugar and instant coffee but there is fridge where you can put some small items like yogurt and cheese. No facilities to prepare one's own food or take away.
Shanti - AZ, United States (July 2018)
A most wonderful stay in Venice. Father Peter welcomed us warmly and gave us a bottle of wine to enjoy with our lunch and dinner which we bought in a supermarket nearby and enjoyed In the kitchen. Our room was spacious with a very comfortable bed.
Breakfast is yoghurt, breads, jams, croissants and pastries. There is a fridge to store your own food if you so wish. The only thing I would have wished for was a coffee machine to enjoy a proper coffee (instant coffee sachets available) and a microwave.
The location is perfect and easy walking to all the streets of Venice. There are super restaurants around the corner from the monastery which the locals frequent.
Thank you Fr. Peter for absolutely fantastic stay and perfect accommodation in Venice.
Maria - Gauteng, South Africa (June 2018)
Had a wonderful time on our first trip to Venice. Fr Peter was so very kind and helpful. We loved the location, close enough to walk to the major attractions & restaurants, but far enough away to provide peace & solitude. We would definitely stay here again if we ever get back!
Vicki - KS, United States (June 2018)
It was a very nice hotel, and next door to a beautiful basilica church full of paintings by Tintoretto. father Peter, the host, is a very charming man. The guests all come alive, happily talking, when he is on the scene.
Jon - OR, United States (June 2018)
Excellent place to stay! Monastery was out of the way but very quiet location. Very clean and spacious rooms! Father Peter was such a gracious host. Anything we needed he was more than willing to help us. He gave us an excellent restaurant recommendation. We loved staying at this location!
Sue - TX, United States (June 2018)
Clean modern room facilities in a beautiful historic building. Well located and easy access to everything including the airport. Fr Peter gave us an incredible stay and is a wonderful host - so kind, helpful and friendly. He made us feel like part of the family community. He provided us with good information on where to visit. His recommendation on where to eat was perfect too. The historic Madonna dell'Orto 15th Century Church next door (one of Fr Peter's parish responsibilities) is a must see. As Fr Peter explained, it was the parish church of Tintoretto and therefore has both many of paintings and his tomb.
Mary - , New Zealand (June 2018)
Fantastic stay!
Terri - UT, USA (May 2018)
I cannot say how grateful I am to ALL your crew and Padre Piergiorgio. He was SUCH a welcoming person and charming character.
I had a few problems finding the door at first but then it was like heaven being there.
Maybe just a coffee machine could be installed and the possibility to do some laundry would be a plus.
Otherwise when I see the business done in Venezia with tourism I could just recommend with strictly no reserve this place and the host. I don't think it's possible to find a better place for the price asked.
Also one point that is extremely important is that the boat stop in just five minutes away from the location. The price of the ticket (15 euros) is totally worth the journey to go back the airport if you have to fly.
Also in the evening you can walk back form the center or the train station in 15 minutes or take the vaporetto
What else ? Just a big thank you - Grazie - Merci!
Pierre - , France (May 2018)
Absolutely wonderful place to stay. The rooms are very clean, large, and comfortable, and the decor and atmosphere are lovely and historical. The location is rather quiet, and yet very close to many affordable restaurants and of course in easy walking distance to anywhere else on the island. The Father who greeted us was very helpful and friendly, and we appreciated his welcome. The only reason I rated the value down was that the stay was a little more expensive than I would normally like, but it nevertheless exceeded my expectations.
Aileen - UT, United States (May 2018)
Lovely accommodation in a quiet area of Venice. The rooms are very spacious, light and airy with modern bathroom facilities. Breakfast included fresh croissants from a nearby bakery. Bottles of water and tea and coffee were available with no extra charge.
Joanna - Derbyshire, United Kingdom (May 2018)
What a wonderful respite! Thank you Fr Peter for your hospitality. The church and access to Mass was an added blessing!
Shannon - WA, United States (April 2018)
Father Peter was wonderful, hospitable and welcoming. If/when we return to Venice, we will definitely stay here again and will recommend this accommodation in the monastery to anyone we know who will be traveling here. It was very clean! The elevator was helpful with our luggage and the light breakfast was fresh.
Sandra - BC, Canada (April 2018)
A really local spot. So quiet away from the madding crowd! Very friendly host who recommended a restaurant with good value, excellent food, by the canal. Everything within easy reach - we chose to use the Vaporetto every day which was so lovely and weather perfect
Christine - , United Kingdom (April 2018)
We felt very good in your house and were warmly welcomed.
Christiane - , Germany (November 2017)
Had a lovely stay here. It is about 20 minutes walk from the railway station and away from the 'main road'. This means it is quiet but still within easy walking distance of all the main sights and restaurants. The room and bathroom were quite large and the beds and pillows were comfortable.
Fiona - QLD, Australia (October 2017)
A wonderful place to stay, we were shown great hospitality. I would recommend highly.
Cosima - London, United Kingdom (October 2017)
Nice quiet location close to vaporetto and 15 minute walk from the train station. Father Peter was a gracious host.
Rhonda - Alberta, Canada (October 2017)
We had been robbed in Rome and had no credit cards, only cash. The Priest arranged with monastery stay.com so that our family in Australia could pay the balance for us, he was amazingly helpful and understanding
Greg - Victoria, Australia (October 2017)
We had a great stay here. Fr Peter was very welcoming and we loved staying in residential part of Venice. It was well located for the vaporetto and there were plenty of lovely places for dinner that were an easy stroll. I would definitely choose to stay here again, if I'm in Venice again.
Catherine - VIC, Australia (October 2017)
We had a great stay. Our room was large and very comfortable. The location was quiet, a nice change from busy San Marco square. We went to a nearby restaurant recommended by the Father. The food was great and they knocked off $5 euros from the bill when we showed them a card the father gave us.
Randy - TX, United States (September 2017)
I am very satisfied with cleaness of the room and friendliness of the father. Neigbourhood is quiet but interesting and underrated. The church of Madonna del orto is beautiful.
David - , Slovenia (September 2017)
This was a great location - away from all of the bustle so it was quiet but with lots of restaurant choices nearby. Within easy walking distance of everything. We were treated like family, very personal service. The kitchen was a real benefit for breakfast and to meet other guests.
Brenda - Saskatchewan, Canada (September 2017)
It was the perfect place to explore Venice. The neighbourhood is just that-a working, thriving neighbourhood that has embraced a bit of tourism. Everyone was so friendly and it was a beautiful, easy walk from the accomodation to grab dinner, a coffee or a drink.
Fr. Peter was lovely, friendly and helpful and really interested in our trip and plans! The accommodation was beautiful and impeccably clean.
Marisa - Ontario, Canada (September 2017)
The welcome was great and we feel very well at this accomodation.
Adeline - , France (September 2017)
This is a wonderful location in a quiet part of Venice. A lovely welcome by Father Pier Georgio who gave us a kettle for our room as we were staying for 5 nights. A beautiful big room, simply furnished with views from two big windows. We had exclusive use of an excellent bathroom. We were on the 4th floor and there is limited lift, so plenty of exercise to offset too many delicious Italian meals in the local cafes.
[There is a new lift to all floors, 2018]
Margaret - , United Kingdom (September 2017)
Fr. Peter was a warm and friendly host. He helped us check in quickly and referred us to a great restaurant nearby for dinner. We could not have had a nicer stay. It was a great location to see Venice, Murano and Burano because of its proximity to the vaporetto station. We got a pass for unlimited rides and made a lot of use of it!
Ruth - MD, United States (September 2017)
This is wonderful guest house. Cannaregio is a quiet section of Venice, a nice break after a day of walking and sightseeing. There is a vaporetto stop ( Orto ) right around the corner, many restaurants and a grocery store nearby. Father Peter makes you feel so welcome, I didn't want to leave. Our room was a triple, clean, with A/C and large private bath. I would stay here again in a heartbeat. Thank you Father Peter and staff
Patricia - PA, United States (July 2017)
We ended a two-week multi-city visit to Italy by spending our last three nights in Venice. This was a great place to stay--less than a block from the "bus" stop (boat), and only a couple of blocks from restaurants and access to gondolas, water taxis, and more. The church connected to this monastery happened to be hosting a organ/violin concert the night we arrived, which our host invited us to attend. It was wonderful! Our host, Peter, went over and above the call of duty to help us figure out how to get around, how to get to the airport for an early flight, and suggestions for places to eat and sites to see. We feel like we made a new friend. We highly recommend this monastery for all travellers.
David - OH, United States (June 2017)
We had a really experience staying at the monastery, Padre Peter was very welcoming and helpful. Two pillows would have been nice though!
Penelope - London, United Kingdom (May 2017)
Fantastic place to stay. In a beautiful quiet part of Venice out of the craziness of the main boys. Wonderful restaurants nearby and right next to a water bus stop taking you into main Venice or over to the beautiful islands or Lido.
Christine - SouthYorkshire, United Kingdom (May 2017)
My five year old daughter and I had such a wonderful stay. Father Peter was was so welcoming and kind to us, especially to my daughter. Our room was huge, very clean and very peaceful. The monastery is located in a peaceful and beautiful part of Venice, we greatly enjoyed coming back there and it was a peaceful haven after some of the more touristy areas of Venice. Having access to a kitchen was a bonus as some evenings we were too tired to go out and also eating out all the time with kids can be challenging. The madonna dell'Orto church is very beautiful and we would love to stay here again, especially as a family although I would also stay here without my kids too. Highly recommend
Phillipa - London, United Kingdom (April 2017)
I loved my stay here. Father Peter was so welcoming and friendly. I say I took a taxi but this is Venice and so my taxi here was a private boat from the airport. Delivered me to within 50 feet of the door.
The venue is in the quieter part of Venice, which I loved, and the room was as expected. Clean and simple but that was all I wanted and expected. I had access to a kitchen and dining room on the floor above so was able to prepare and eat what I wanted and when I wanted. A fridge was available to store food etc.
Nothing wrong with the bed, just me being used to a slightly softer one and my older bones do like to complain. Private bathroom was "en-suite" and clean and efficient.
I have no reservations about returning here on my future stays in Venice. Amongst the locals and away from the crowds of the centre of Venice.
I have already recommended to friends.
John - Essex, United Kingdom (April 2017)
Great place in many ways. Excellent location and priest on duty was lovely and very friendly. Only drawback was no air conditioning (which we knew in advance), but this in combination with having to keep windows shut at night to stop mosquitoes and being at the top of the building, made it very hot and uncomfortable. Would recommend more for cooler months.
[Monastery Stays note: Fans & Air Conditioning, can be requested on booking or once at the guest house. Limited availability]
Sheila - Surrey, United Kingdom (July 2016)
Thank you for your welcoming, and most of all for your adaptability to our train time schedule. Wishing you best wishes.
Myriam - , Switzerland (June 2016)
We would love to visit again. The welcome from Father Peter was exceptional and we were made to feel at home in this peaceful place. For us it was perfectly located, out of the hustle and bustle of the main tourist areas.
Douglas - Devon, United Kingdom (May 2016)
Very pleasant and quiet location on the north side of Venice. The priest who greeted us and escorted us to the room made sure we had everything we needed. We found several nearby restaurants that catered to the locals and had outstanding food. The refrigerator in the common room just outside our door was handy for keeping some small food items we used for snacks and refreshments.
A Eugene - WI, United States (May 2016)
The only thing I felt did not fit my standards, was the jet of the showerwater, that should be stronger.
As for our host, he was very friendly and helpful. All in all, definitely worth it!
Belle-Rosa - , Belgium (May 2016)
Perfection! Large apartment right on the canal in charming off the beaten path neighborhood. Monastery was beautiful, spacious and clean! Father Peter was an excellent host! Close walk to all of Venice and nice to return to this peaceful side of the island. I would stay there again in a heart beat!!
Rebecca - FL, United States (June 2015)
Fr Peter welcomed us and during our stay certainly made us feel at home. The location suited us as we explored Venice. Cooking arrangements fine and close to supermarkets etc. Beds were basic. Thanks for a great stay
Richard - South Australia, Australia (May 2015)
Wonderful, Wonderful, Wonderful
Phillip - Victoria, Australia (October 2014)
We had a wonderful 3 day stay with our toddler son. Amazing hospitality, great facilities, and the best location we could ask for. We will stay again in future and will recommend to friends.
Mr. Steve W - Ontario, Canada (October 2014)
What a lovely place to stay, away from the bustle of the tourist strip, yet within easy walking distance. Has a communal kitchen so you can prepare your own food if you would like. A Biro within walking distance and lots of eating places nearby. Very easy to access from the airport. The Alilaguna Water Bus, Orange line, has its first stop at Madonna dell'Orto and then it is a 100 metre flat walk. Would definitely stay there again.
Glen - Queensland, Australia (September 2014)
My wife and I have nothing but praise for our hosts and the staff. If we were to visit Venice again, this would be the place we would choose first if it were available. The neighborhood is also a plus and proximity to several ferry lines.
Jim - , Netherlands (September 2014)
We really enjoyed our stay here(3 x bedroom).
Loved that it is away from the main tourist area.(San Marco Square) Walking distance to Monastery from the train termini. So close to ferry to Isle of Murano.Pubs, eating place every where here. Great find. Yes, would stay here again in a heart beat!
Maree - Victoria, Australia (September 2014)
This is a wonderful place to stay if you like complete silence and rest. It's a complete other 'world' than the crowded environment of San Marco and surroundings. Of course the place is rather far from the tourist center; but in my opinion that was great. It takes you some effort to walk extra but it's worth it. We will absolutely go back there when we visit Venice again.
You have to keep in mind that this is not a hotel; so don't expect the usual hotel services.
Ria - , Belgium (August 2014)
This was a great location, kind of out of the way in a quiet part of town. Staff were helpful.
Marylee - OR, United States (July 2014)
Excellent value for Venice. Very large room with kitchenette. Nice to have a canal front room.
Lance - Western Australia, Australia (June 2014)
The location is ideal: the Alilaguna boat from the airport drops you at the Madonna del'Orta jetty and then you have just a couple of minutes' walk to get to the guest house. The guest house itself is on a beautiful canal in what must surely be one of the quietist parts of Venice. This really is where the Venetians live - loads of character.
At such a reasonable price (for Venice) we didn't expect luxury, but our room was exceptionally spacious, clean, quiet, and the beds were comfortable. The fact that there was no breakfast provided was an advantage, as it made us sortie out and eat with the locals in a pasticceria - much better.
There are excellent (& very reasonable) restaurants nearby - try Tintoretto for example (we went there twice). It's only 6 or 7 minutes walk from the San Marcuolo vaporetto stop on the Grand Canal, so you're not out of the way.
Staff were very friendly (& spoke enough English to be able to help us!). This is a friendly place, basic but comfortable - don't choose it if you want luxury, but staying here certainly added to our holiday.
Richard - , United Kingdom (June 2014)
The people were very nice and helpful!! We had a pleasant stay!!
Bonnie - Saskatchewan, Canada (May 2014)
We had a wonderful stay here. The monastery was very clean, interesting to explore, and a good value. It was a bit of a long commute to St. Mark's square, however. We also had trouble finding someone to ask when we ran out of toilet paper and our trash can was overflowing, but these were very minor issues. Overall, I would definitely recommend this place to others.
Rebecca - NJ, United States (May 2014)
Excellent accommodation in the beautiful, peaceful Cannaregio district of Venice, a place to rest and explore the amazing historical region. We loved our apartment situated next to the Monastery with our own entrance right on the canal, the beds were comfortable and the accommodation was spacious and clean. It is an excellent position being in the area where the locals live allowing you a glimpse of true Venetian life, everything is within walking distance or a slow leisurely vaporetto ride away. Francesca assisted us throughout our stay and was charming, booking and payment was smooth and simple. There is so much to see in this incredible city it is worth staying at least 5 full days, every bridge and every canal is a pleasure to explore and the art, architecture and history is truly wonderful.
Robert - New South Wales, Australia (May 2014)
There was no breakfast but had a kitchen which was useful.
Freddy - Kerala, India (April 2014)
Our room was spacious but the bathroom and shower were tiny. We loved that the monastery was far away from the busy main tourist area but still in a lovely location. The Madonna dell' Orto church next door is well worth a visit. So peaceful at night that we slept very well.
Margaret J - Manitoba, Canada (September 2013)
We were very happy with our large well furnished room, even had a sea view. It was cleaned every day and sheets and towels changed every two days. Office staff were very helpful. I was able to borrow a hairdryer. There was a fridge in the common room, and a kitchen upstairs. The location of the property was lovely - a quiet interesting area with a small supermarket, bakery, other shops, and bars/restaurants nearby. Great for access to the airport on the Alilaguna boat. Would wholeheartedly recommend.
Helen - London, United Kingdom (May 2013)
Only one small glitch and that was the wifi was so spotty. Otherwise we enjoyed the facilities very much. It was convenient but off the beaten tourist path, which was perfect!
Victoira - CO, United States (October 2012)
We had some initial concerns about how noisy our room might be as it fronted the street and was next to an entrance door. As it turned out this is a residential neighbourhood which settles down at night and is then relatively quiet until morning.
Graeme - Queensland, Australia (October 2012)
It was our second stay there, and we enjoyed it very much. Everyone was helpful and kind.
Lillian - CA, United States (September 2012)
A great quiet location in Venice, but not far from access to main attractions. Easy access to vaporetta stop. Common room and use of a fridge. No imposition on guest other than requirement for respectful behaviour. Next door to the fabulous Madonna dell'Orta church.
Margaret - Northern Territory, Australia (August 2012)
Wonderful experience, staff very helpful and welcoming. Again Monastery Stays did a wonderful job in organising the accommodation at short notice.
Sandra - New South Wales, Australia (October 2011)
Fantastic self catered accommodation close to everything, have told friends already what a great time we had there.
Peter - Victoria, Australia (September 2011)
In a quiet part of Venice, that was a plus. It was large with a little kitchen and dining area as well as four beds - another plus.
Stephen - FL, United States (June 2011)
A lovely stay. The priest who greeted us was delightful and very friendly, despite not speaking English and we speaking poor Italian. It was great that we had our own key, allowing us to come and go as we pleased. The church bell ringing (loudly) at 7am each day meant an early rise, but it was all part of the Venician experience.
Mark - New South Wales, Australia (June 2011)
The stay was amazing and Enzo was really helpful. We really liked the neighbourhood because it was out of the major tourist area.
gabriel - British Columbia, Canada (April 2011)
Great location, close to transport, quiet area away from the main tourist hub but within easy access.
Frances - Victoria, Australia (September 2010)
We were very pleased with the cleanliness and spaciousness of our room, and also with the location in a wonderful, quiet part of town. The convent was newly renovated and very clean and neat. Our room had very high ceilings and was spacious. The check-out was smooth and we were able to leave our luggage behind to be picked up at the end of the day. A fridge in the room may have been nice, but we also appreciated the simplicity of it all. Altogether, staying at this convent was a thouroughly pleasant experience and we would stay here again, without question, on our next visit to Venice.
Michel - Ontario, Canada (August 2010)
The room was spacious and clean, beds were comfortable. Great location. The room was great, but had had smokers there before us obviously. Unfortunately the kitchen was not really user friendly - no microwave or electric jug, and the fridge was full of old food from other people.
Elise - New South Wales, Australia (September 2009)
Excellent location in Venice. Room very large and extremely comfortable. Staff all very helpful. Hot water pressure in shower not good.
SHARON - Western Australia, Australia (June 2009)
It felt safe and it was clean. The staff, while friendly, spoke little english and there were some difficulties with communication.
Alice - CA, United States (May 2009)
The location, room, and our time in the monastery was fabulous. The room was huge! It was very nice and comfortable. The staff was very kind. It was a quiet respite after a terrific day of strolling around Venice.
The gentleman who greeted us did not speak any English. Luckily I can speak French!
Kelly - CO, United States (September 2008)
The room, the people there, the peace.
Ann-Kristin - Nordland, Norway (July 2008)
We were not expecting a kitchen and laundry and were very pleased it was included as we were able to cook our own meals and do our laundry.
