Experience Verona - The City of Romeo and Juliet
(but with less tragedy!)
Accommodation in authentic monastery & convent guest houses throughout Italy
Travelling in summer by Eurostar Italia, from Rome to Verona was a fun start to our northern Italian adventure.

Stunning scenery abounds through the heart of Italy and train travel is a relaxing and ideal way to take in view, it is safe and efficient.

We arrived at Verona 's railway station, Porta Nouva, on a gloriously warm summer day and readily accessed a taxi for transport to our home in Verona for the next few days.

A ten minute taxi ride on the road following to the Adige River which runs through the heart of Verona and we arrived at our Monastery Stay - VEV126.

Located near the Adige River on the outskirts but within easy striking distance by taxi or bus of the historical heart of Verona.

The Italian Alps are only an hour from our monastery and can be viewed in the distance.
Large parks and gardens surround the modern, well facilitated venue. The accommodation is run by a group of gracious men appointed by the local Bishop, once a seminary it is now disposed as accommodation, with conference and meeting facilities on offer.

Breakfast is included in the room rate and this busy well air-conditioned venue is frequented by travellers like us, families celebrating weddings, conference attendees - all meet over croissants, coffee and fruit.

Housekeeping is excellent - cleanliness and hygiene second to none. Reception staff are efficient and helpful with transport arrangements and there is a coffee and bar service on one side of reception. Common areas are large, convenient and well maintained.

A ten minute trip by taxi or an easy twenty minute bus ride from the monastery and you are at the central Piazza Bra - the serene historical and stunning heart of this famous northern city.
Things to do in Verona
Gorgeous monuments, architecture and history surround you as you stroll the medieval streets of Shakespeare 's Romeo and Giuletta.

Taste the northern Italian local fare in the historically atmospheric trattoria, bars, restaurants and osteria.

As to the events in Verona, though extensive, the highlight for us was attendance at the Arena for the summer season of outdoor Opera [a ten week opera festival is conducted each year with its finale at the end of August] as well as other classical and popular music events.

The main venue is the magnificently retained Roman Arena of 100 AD ancestry. Despite earthquake damage through the ages, it operates in its original state as a venue for entertainment of its citizens - Magnifico and Grande!

The spectacle of both Tosca and the grand production Aida defies description, except to say that it is a memorable experience [should you decide to attend] due to the scale of the staging set at the venue, the acoustics, the popularity of the occasion amongst the residents and the music of course - drawn globally from a colourful pool of musical talent.

If music is not your thing (and even if it is), don 't miss the historical tours arranged by the Information Centre centrally located in the Piazza Bra and well conducted by English speaking assistants.

The historical story of Verona is based on three eras of architecture - Verona in Roman times, Verona in Medieval times and Verona in the Renaissance. It is one of the classical places of culture to visit on a trip to Italy - it is important, but on a smaller scale, when compared with Venice, a near neighbour with both being in the region of Veneto. Verona is also the gateway city to the beautiful northern region including Lake Garda.

The walled city is easily accessed, a walker 's city on the whole and a haven for historical and artistic exploration on foot or by bike - not to be missed!
