House of the Frati Minori

This historical guest house is situated in the midst of the Tuscan mountains and is said to be the site where Saint Francis of Assisi received the stigmata. The surrounding forests and the building's grand architectural style make for a true experience. Great for those looking for the peaceful retreat the unique location presents.

The chapel at the sanctuary, Stigmata, is an attraction in itself. It was built around 1260 by Conti Guidi di Poppi and is said to be the place where Saint Francis of Assisi received the stigmata. Other important buildings include the Santa Maria degli Angeli Church as well as the Letto di San Francesco cave, or the bed of Saint Francis in English.

Next time we would stay longer in this holy, sacred space. One night isn't enough. We were grateful for the amazing service, delicious food and the ability to bask in the experiences of St. Francis. We'll return!

I loved La Verna! I am so happy we chose to stay here. Staying at the Monastery was so peaceful. The bus tours came through during the day, but early morning and evening was quiet and gave us an opportunity to feel the presence of this Holy place. Our triple room was clean and had everything we needed. We ate three meals a day there. Breakfast was light with bread, jam, cereal, milk and very strong coffee. Lunch and dinner were both served with more food than I could eat. Both included a first plate of bread and pasta or soup, then a second plate with meat, potatoes & vegetables. Fruit and cheese for dessert. Water and wine to drink. The food was wonderful! I recommend taking the hike up to the top of Mount Penna. It took about an hour to go up and the same to return. We spent 15 days in Europe and this hike was our favorite part. Please spend at least two nights at La Verna. It takes at least that much time to attend the various prayers and masses and get connected with the Spirit here. I highly recommend this Monastery. Its hard to reach but so worth the effort.
