Right next to an enormous National Park, this venue is great for those looking to go hiking and admire the glorious views of the Tuscan countryside.Chiusi della Verna lies on the southern tip of a National Park that spans across Tuscany and Emilia Romagna. The Parco Nazionale delle Foreste Casentinesi Monte Falterona Campigna, is a vast forest with plenty of wildlife and native plants to see. The most famous part of the park is arguably La Verna, where it is said that Saint Francis of Assisi received the stigmata. The sanctuary was a retreat for Saint Francis from the early 13th century. Apart from this holy site, the park is also famous for its waterfalls, hiking trails and the towering Mt. Falterona, which sits at over 1300m above sea level. Chiusi della Verna is also a great base for discovering the surrounding cities of Arezzo, Florence and Siena.

The nuns took me in and were very kind. The location is very good, bus stops right outside, and the walking track up to the Franciscan sanctuary starts just a few doors down. The convent is next door to a bar and a few doors away from a restaurant. My room was old-fashioned but clean and comfortable. Chiusi (the town) is not very accessible by public transport (only a few buses a day from Bibbiena) but is beautiful and quiet, an alpine town in the Casentino National Park. |
