Puglia

Puglia lies along the Adriatic coast of Italy. Its advantage over its more northerly neighbors is that it is flat and fertile. It produces the largest amount of olive oil and wine in Italy and has several large commercial centers including Bari, Lecce, Tarranto and Brindisi.

Puglia has glorious architecture, particularly churches and castles in the North. It has curious "trulli" houses in the center and the town of Lecce demonstrates its baroque architectural style exquisitely.

The main city is the port town of Bari also known as the home of the Tarantella dance.

Must see places include:

- Trani - Norman castle and church in a seaside town

- Castel Del Monte - Home to a castle built in the 13th century by Frederick II

- Alberobello - The capital of Puglia's 'Trulli' houses

- Taranto - Home to the Italian navy

- Galatina - A major wine center in the region

- Otranto - A quaint old roman port with a castle in the city center
- San Giovanni Rotondo - the famous pilgrimage site for Padre Pio Staying in a monastery or convent guest house in Puglia is a unique alternative to mainstream hotel accommodation. Open to all, these guest houses give you a true insight in to life in Puglia - a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of Puglia and experience a hospitality tradition that has been around for 1500+ years.
