Well located to all the sites of central Rome, near the Vatican and Castel Sant'Angelo.
Rated 4.6 out of 5
We had the best time here. The sisters are so sweet. They didn't speak English but we were able to get along fine with google translate. The villa is walking distance from the Vatican and restaurants but required a taxi to most other sights. I highly recommend!

MaryAnne - OH, United States (May 2019)
It was sparkling clean, great location and the Sisters were wonderfully welcoming and helpful.
Crisanto - TX, United States (March 2019)
The nuns were so friendly and kind, the room was very clean and the location was great! We even found parking on the street free of charge right outside of the monastery. I highly recommend it!
Andrea - BC, Canada (May 2018)
The sisters running the guest house were very friendly and helpful.
Shau - British Columbia, Canada (October 2016)
Extremely welcoming and friendly.
Michael - , United Kingdom (April 2016)
What an awesome location!! It's a bit tricky to get to by bus but there's a small bus that stops exactly in front of the monastery so don't lug your suitcases from the main road. Wait for the Monte dal Gallo 34 bus, it's worth it, even though it doesn't run too frequently.
The nuns were so sweet and nice. They couldn't do enough for us. I would definitely return to this monastery in a heart beat.
Marie - Ontario, Canada (March 2016)
The sisters were welcoming and helpful. Location close to Vatican and bus #64 and not too far from Metro was convenient for us. Future travelers might want to know they can get from Rome's central train station to very near this location via San Pietro train stop of local train.
Julie - WY, United States (October 2015)
I felt very comfortable during my stay. The Sisters were very helpful & patient with me due to the language barrier, we generally communicated with actions & some English.
I also listened to the Sisters while they were singing their Vespers so beautiful!
Leonie - NSW, Australia (October 2015)
Everything was all right. We felt like in our house. The room was really cleaned and peaceful. The sisters were very kind with us.
Felix - Madrid, Spain (September 2015)
Very nice and quiet, not far to walk from buses and trains to airport and central Rome (Termini). Big and clean room and bathroom, good beds.
Jan Terje - , Norway (September 2015)
Sister Maria and Sister Elizabeth were so hospitable and welcoming. You knew that hospitality was a priority for them. We were blessed to have been with them.
Marianne - NC, United States (September 2015)
The nuns were SO SWEET! They took such good care of us and treated us like family. My friends and I felt so welcomed by both sisters who cared for us. They always made sure to talk to us and help us as best and they could. Although they spoke little English, they managed to communicate very well and treated us with such kindness. My stay in this monastery was one of my favorite parts of being in Rome.
Mariam - WA, United States (September 2015)
We loved staying here with the sisters. They're very sweet, caring, and great to talk to. They were very willing to help with directions and advice on where to go. I highly recommend this convent. You'll love the room size, the quality of service, and the fact that you're supporting women who are living their lives to help others.
Magali - CA, United States (June 2015)
The convent was wonderfully located with a train stop 5 minutes away and St. Peter's square just a 10 minute walk.
We had a wonderful stay at this Villa. The Nun's were very accommodating and helped us find our way around. The rooms were very clean, the shower was excellent, and the beds were very comfortable. Very close to the Vatican. I would recommend this Villa to anyone.
William - Ontario, Canada (May 2015)
Really lovely place to stay only 10 minutes walk to St Peters Square. What more could you want.
Kath - Essex, United Kingdom (April 2015)
My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay. So clean and delightfully quiet. Only 5 minute walk to the Vatican. Safe neighborhood. A great value.
Kathleen - NC, United States (April 2015)
We were very happy with the accommodation and service. The nuns were very helpful and friendly.
Neil - uae, United Arab Emirates (April 2015)
Wonderful stay. Thank you for your hospitality.
Eston - LA, United States (October 2014)
The nuns were lovely, room was good, bathroom great. Nice cafe close by for early coffee as no breakfast included. A little out of the way for my liking but all in all, an enjoyable stay, thank you.
Sonia - New South Wales, Australia (July 2014)
This is the second time I stayed here. So lovely, the nuns are sweet, nice to be off the hassle and bustle of Rome, a haven.
Maureen - CA, United States (June 2014)
It was perfect in every way. The nuns were very kind and helpful. The location was great for our plans. The nights were completely silent except for the birds waking us in the morning.
Margaret - , New Zealand (May 2014)
The sisters were lovely and accommodating. There is a bus stop across the street from the convent. The walk to the Vatican is not far, so the bus isn't critical, but very nice after a long day of walking.
Gail - NM, United States (May 2014)
Villa Santa Maria is a safe, relaxing, peaceful place to rest your head in the bustling city of Rome. My adult daughter and I shared a lovely twin room on the first floor with views towards St. Peter's Basilica. We were impressed with this beautiful Villa and the friendly Sisters who take care of their weary travellers. the rooms were meticulously cleaned each day and were large and airy with a very generous modern bathroom. The neighbourhood is safe and an easy walk to the Vatican and St. Peters as well as the centre of Rome, alternatively the bus is just a few steps away. We chose to walk the entire city and it was brilliant as we saw everything on the list as well as a few amazing surprises. I would highly recommend a stay at Villa Santa Maria for all ages, singles, couples as well as families. A special note of thank you to all the Sisters, I will never forget listening to your beautiful singing drifting through the corridors each morning and the church bells of St. Peters ringing throughout the day.
Robert - New South Wales, Australia (May 2014)
Sisters were very friendly. Most spoke a little English. Location is perfect. A 10 minute walk to the Vatican. We managed to see Pope Francis at a Wednesday audience.
Anne - Queensland, Australia (October 2013)
The ladies of the guest house are wonderful! They were very helpful and always greeted us with a smile. If/when I go back to Rome, I would stay here again.
Stephanie - DC, United States (October 2012)
The Sisters were very kind, helpful and gracious. We very much enjoyed our stay and would stay there again in a heart beat. We will and have recommended LAR140 to others and encourage you to stay there too!
Mark - AE, United States (October 2012)
The only real downside was the noise of cars and people in the evening hours, but that was out of the control of the monastery. Other than that, the sisters were very friendly, and always willing to do whatever they could to make our stay comfortable.
Saul - WI, United States (October 2012)
Our stay at the venue was extremely comfortable. The room was impeccably clean, the Sisters were very friendly and hosptitable. The location was great, close enough to walk to the Vatican but located in a semi-residential area. I felt we had the 'full flavour' of Rome during our stay.
Jennifer - Ontario, Canada (September 2012)
It was lovely very clean nice big room very peaceful and quiet.
Catherine - New South Wales, Australia (May 2012)
Very kind Sisters managing the place. Very peaceful and felt very secure and safe here
Mary Elizabeth - Laguna, Philippines (May 2012)
I have never seen such clean rooms anywhere! Could have eaten dinner off the floor. Nuns were very sweet. Street quiet and leafy. For the price it was everything we needed and we would definitely stay there again.
Helen - Suffolk, United Kingdom (May 2012)
This was extremely good value for money. The nuns were very welcoming and despite our lack of Italian we managed to converse in French and they were extremely helpful.
Margaret - Herefordshire, United Kingdom (April 2012)
Very nice, but very limited English spoken by the nuns. The rooms are very basic, but we didn't go to Rome to sit in a room. We would definitely stay here again.
Gary - MN, United States (April 2012)
Very clean. Great location. Kind staff. Good price for Rome
David - Greater Manchester, United Kingdom (March 2012)
It was easy to find, just a few minutes from the "Roma S. Pietro" train stop, with regular trains to and from the main Roma Termini train station. There is no breakfast, but there is a supermarket directly across the street. I am very thankful for the warm greetings every time I returned--a nice change from the daily just-one-of-the-tourists-in-a-crowd feel. The curfew time was convenient enough (11pm-7am), and had the unanticipated consequence I was better rested than I otherwise would have been.
Jonathan - IL, United States (March 2012)
It was a good place to stay, and a good value, but I think I'd like to stay in a different part of town next time. It was a more modern building so lacked the charm of other sites.
Deborah - FL, United States (October 2011)
The sisters were very good to welcome us even though our train came in after their usual office hours. The only aspect of the stay that may prove difficult for some travellers is the 11 PM curfew. Otherwise the stay was excellent and highly recommended to other travellers to Rome/the Vatican.
Chris - Ontario, Canada (October 2011)
It was a great experience and I would recommend staying there to anyone.
Charles - IA, United States (October 2011)
Extremely nice and accommodating! A joy to stay with!
Charles - CA, United States (August 2011)
Please let the Sisters know that we thoroughly enjoyed our time in their home and are very appreciative of how welcoming they were! Everything was just wonderful and we would certainly recommend it to our family and friends and hopefully one day stay there again!
Suzanne - PA, United States (June 2011)
Very close to St. Peters Basilica (1500 feet) and the San Pietro railway station (500 feet away). There is no A/C or TV or breakfast but the price is very good compared to most places in Rome and the location is excellent.
Art - AK, United States (June 2011)
Breakfast wasn't included which was a downfall but that's ok. The rooms and the cleanliness of the rooms were superb! The nuns were really nice!
Kathryn - AL, United States (May 2011)
It is not pleasant to disturb the nuns every time you want to enter. The nuns are very friendly, but they should have an automatic entry possibility for their guests.
Jacques - , Netherlands (March 2011)
Very friendly staff. Clean. Staff went out of way to please us.
CARMELLIA - LA, United States (October 2010)
Very clean, very very friendly, good standard room mosquitoes, featureless room (but you don't visit Rome for the looks of your hotel room, right...).
Gijsberth - , Netherlands (August 2010)
Clean and quite, good location.
jing - NJ, United States (April 2010)
Very clean. Nuns were very friendly.
shirley - Western Australia, Australia (September 2009)
We requested 3 single beds. Got a private mini-suite with 2 rooms (double and single) plus bathroom. Needed to ring bell to summon a nun in order to to be allowed to get in each time thru locked gate. It's a wonderful concept that works great. Saved me a lot of time and money.
Cathy - CA, United States (June 2009)
Sisters were very helpful and facilities were great. It helped make our trip a success. The room was spotless and well maintained. No problems. I cannot think of anything I would change.
Martha - OH, United States (October 2008)
Modest, yet comfortable room. Would have been great with air. Nice nuns, eager to please and help.
David - FL, United States (August 2008)
Close to the Vatican. Fair distance from centre of Rome.
Terry - Victoria, Australia (October 2007)
The place was extraordinarily clean and the sisters tried their very best to be accomodating. They cleaned everything every day, (although daily cleaning didn't seem to be provided from info on the website.) The bathroom was as large and modern (although basic) as any we had in Italy & we stayed at 5 other hotels. The sisters were very welcoming about attending mass with them and very understanding when we inadvertently set off the building alarm when we left the building at 6 in the morning! Although an elevator was listed and was there, it was not to be used by guests. A bummer going up flights of stairs with luggage. The building was alarmed, so someone had to come down the stairs and buzz you in, whenever you came in - we felt like we were inconveniencing the sisters whenever we returned (and when we tried to leave at 6 am!). Only one sister spoke English at all, and she fell ill while we were there, which certainly made us learn Italian faster! But it was hard to communicate. Very simple, but completely comfortable and incredibly clean. The sisters were as helpful as possible!
Loretta - CA, United States (September 2007)
Nuns were welcoming, en suite accommodation was excellent, very quiet for Rome Neverthless cheap. It was entirely satisfactory.
Peter - North Yorkshire, United Kingdom (September 2007)
The curfew was more flexible than expected. Breakfast was not included. However, for Italy that is not so much of a problem as croissant and cappuccino are to be found on every street corner. Yes I would recommend to family and friends who were interested in cultural tourism and not partying until late hours.
Bianca - La Spezia, Italy (August 2007)
Very clean. Very friendly and helpful sisters. Maybe the 11pm time limit at night not that it bothered us much.
marie louise - malta/europe, Malta (June 2007)
It was the cleanest and most hospitable of my stays in Europe! The sisters were incredibly nice, funny, and accommodating. Every day was greeted with big smiles, laughs, and interesting conversation. Being able to come back to the monastery was like a sanctuary for me. I immediately felt much better. They made me feel so comfortable! Not to mention every square inch of that place was impeccably clean. Very impressive!
